I have a client with 7 users. Assuming all other things equal (hardware, OS etc) I need a recommendation on which version of Office recommend. Currently, they have 4 users on 2007 on old hardware and 3 users on 2010 with newer hardware. They have appointed a new head (old one is retiring, client is an industry lobby non-profit organisation).

Can I just get two Office 365 for Home boxes and subscribe them once a year? Or should I look at other options?

You can't use Home licenses as they are only licensed for non-commercial use, even though they are a nonprofit organization it's still classified as commercial use and the up to 5 devices means 1 user, 5 devices not up to 5 devices for 5 different users.

Have a look at: http://www.microsoft.com/about/corporatecitizenship/en-us/office365-for-nonprofits/

Not sure how the qualification criteria for that works.

Libre Office 4.1 is free for as many devices as you like and for whatever use you like.

Ja - I'd be all for it except the headache I get from convincing these types to use opensource aint worth it. The thing can function as good as (if not better than) the commercial option but because it is not what they are used to, simple things become a phone call. Those same simple things exist with commercial s/w but there they feel that they can discover the solution themselves.

If they are a NPO they qualify for academic licensing which leads to big discounts when buying OLP. I have 2 clients like this and they pay the pricing of Student & Teacher Version of Windows Office.

Let me know if you need more help or pricing.

What I meant was you get the full version of Office for the same price the Student & Teacher version. Let me check and PM you information. Be aware that with OLP you will probably need to buy 5 licenses if you do not have an active exicting OLP Agreement.
