Which OS is better for gaming?

My brother wants to buy a laptop (512 Mb of RAM, Dual core, graphics card worth +-R1000). Which will have better for gaming performance, Vista or XP?
 
"+-R1000" That would get u a fancy calculator maybe :>>>
 
lol. nah stick to XP pro (32bit) unless u got like 1gig ram (DDR2 ram) and a dual core AMD or intel core duo. Also having a lekker 3dcard built in. Vista chows yur memory alive!
 
I'd have to say XP at the moment, but it's a terrible time to buy a gaming notebook. There will be Dx10/Vista exclusive games out in a year or two, which you may not be able to play or upgrade to.
 
If the graphics card supports DirectX 10, go with Vista. If DirectX 9, go with XP. XP is faster, though only supports DirectX 9.
 
btw, a friend recently played Quake4 on Linux, had 35 FPS, on windows it was between 1 -3 FPS. Though Linux can't play most other games available. I know.

I find this very hard to believe, Tomshardware did a article where they benchmarked a Linux VS Windows system, Windows won 100% of the benchmarks which included native ports. The linux performance ranged from complete crap (IE 2fps with a top end system) to near Windows performance.

It's not hard to see why, graphics card companies spend most of their time developing drivers for Windows since that is what the most consumers use and most games run only on Windows. Furthermore most companies develop games to run on Windows and afterwards make a Linux port, it doesn't take some kind of genius to figure out that it should logically run better on the platform it was optimized to run on in the first place (have you ever played a game ported from a console, usually not a good experience).

Perhaps your friend didn't install the correct drivers or didn't install them at all.

Well he did say what about 1GB ram and he has a Core2Duo already. But still I'd go with what someone said about a DX10 card. Vista if you have a DX10 card already and XP if not.

But I doubt you will have a DX10 card seeing as there are no mid or bottom range cards out yet and they would even be more than R1000.

Buy a Mac. Use bootcamp to install Microsoft OS of your choice. Run many games for Mac OS using OpenGL under Mac OSX, the best commercial PC OS.
You get the best of BOTH worlds.

You can run some of the simpler games, but for instance bf2 and 2142 are off limits to you for online play (which really matters in the game)
