It is a good second place contender, but nothing trumps a Merc.
Matter of opinion. I'll take a BMW over a Merc every time. I wouldn't buy either E or 5 series though.

BMW for me.
Why pick the Diesel for BMW?
I guess it depends. Does it have an auxiliary fuel tank?
The turbo 3.0 inline 6 diesel is the best engine BMW have ever built. 630nm torque, 230kw in the 535d. Nothing matches it on performance. Ignore the small difference in 0 - 100 acceleration. Once the car is moving NOTHING compares with it's mammoth overtaking power.
I have a mate who had a V10 M5. Was a fun car to drive. The sequential gearbox was a turd and eventually broke. I'll take the new turbo V8 over the V10 myself.
Horses for courses. In something silly like an M5 I'd obviously want the most powerful plant available. In an everyday runaround I'd take the diesel hands down.so you won't take the 3.0 diesel motor over the V10 then, because thats how I understood your comment about the diesel being the best motor BMW ever built
Thanks Guys.
Really appreciate all the opinions and advise given. He went for a test drive in an ActiveHybrid 5 Series and fell in love. Should be taking delivery this week.

did he drive the others ?
The E-class is fugly compared to the other two. If he wants Merc, why not a CLS? The thing's gorgeous.
