Which phone to upgrade to??

Hey guys,

So, I'm on an iPhone 6, and I'm getting a little tired of Apple phones. So I'm keen to upgrade to an android phone, but nothing locally really seems to be great. I've got zero interest in Samsung, Sony, and the current LG seems boring. The only other option is the Huawei phones, which seem amazing, but I'm hoping for something with a more active modding community, so that I can install ROMs and so on. And then Huawei doesn't seem to have that.

I know that Google's announcing their Pixel phones next month, which are supposed to replace the Nexus brand, but we've never really had an easy time getting those on Contract here, so that's not helping.

What the hell do I do?

Why not try a Xiaomi phone, they are really good.
You would probably be looking at the mi5

Yeah I don't think we will ever see the Nexus brand on contract what a pitty. Maybe sell your Iphone 6 and look on Orange, they nromally sell Nexus phones there.

coming from an iPhone there is no point in staying away from the flagships. its the only thing that compares. other android phones are still good (and better than apple IMHO) but to truely compare you have 4 options.

1) wait for the new line of google phones, and find a way to bring it into the county. (maybe orange?)

2) find a way to get a onePlusOne 3. its the best droid on the market, and its the best option by a long shot. but getting it here is not going to be easy.

3) find someone who will sell you the HTC ten. its support locally is going to be terrible, but its the second best Droid on the market.

4) get the S7. its still a good phone. the bloatware on it is a lot less than normal, and honestly if you are upgrading on contract in SA this is the only logical option (as OnePlusOne and HTC are not readily available)

other than that, getting last year's Nexus devices or a LG G4 is probibly the next best option.
note how the G4 is on the list but not the G5? the G5 is not as good as the G4. and the G4 and the Nexus phones from last year are the only options that are still kinda valid.

but because you are moving from a high end device there is no point in going to a Xiaomi or a Huwai. there is nothing wrong wiht the brands at all. and they are very valid options, but you need to compare the same things. no point in doing a downgrade in build quality before you understand what a difference the specs of the phone make to performance yet. and that is not a swype at you personally, its the apple mentality of build quality above functionality.

Awesome, replies, thanks guys!

So, I've actually used the Huawei P9, and it felt incredible. Definitely felt in line with my iPhone 6. After reading and watching a bunch of reviews on the P9 Plus, it seems like the only worthy upgrade. Buying a phone cash isn't really an option. Also, buying a OnePlus or a Nexus means that if I drop it and break the screen (which I probably will), I'm totally screwed.

Any P9 or P9 Plus owners here?

I went from iPhone 6s to P9 lite. Tremendous upgrade even though its 1/3 of the price. Camera isn't as good (but still decent!) but I can buy a POS and a SLR for the price difference.

I have said thisbon other threads as well, but Im really keen on the Honor 8. It is now on Orange for just over R6000. It is a pity Orange doesnt stock One+ phones. The other option is to wait for the new Google Pixel phones.
Xiaomi is also quite good but I think the Mi5 is a hit overpriced.
