Which phone ?

Okay, this is not the which phone would you say I must get. I farmer family does not have good signal in his area.

Is there a phone with a strong transmitter in it, or even one with a external antenna.
Will that old Nokia's still work.?

Old Nokia's will still work. All cellular communication is based on GSM technology, which every device obviously supports.

Maybe try a different service provider for better reception?

You can find some Chinese made GSM boosters. A lot of farmers have them and they will allow you decent signal at least in your house.

Alternatively try a prepaid sim of other operators and see what their reception is like

If it is Vodacom you can phone 082 155 and they will send someone to the farm test the signal and provide a booster free of charge.

The Huawei Ascend P7 has dual antennas which may help. But I would suggest you to get one of the signal boostersm

Some Samsung Galaxy phones has a connector for an external antenna. I tested my Note2 and it does make a difference.
