Which Processor

So I've been checking my options i.e. upgrade and get a system that runs cooler & quieter http://www.prophecy.co.za/intel-d946gzis-iselton-intel-946gz-express-chipset-lga775-p-19185.html, http://www.prophecy.co.za/intel-core2-e4300-dual-core-18ghz-p-20940.html. The other being the heat sink and bigger fan. Vista is resource hungry and my system is on the slow side, so I'm wondering, mmmmmm

Those are good choices, dont forget the ram modules. Maybe you should get a new case as well to ensure you have proper support for your configuration. Also how many ATA IDE devices do you have?

I've got 2 SATA drives a 200 & 320 gig & I've got 2 more remaining. I don't know about the ide, think I've got 2.

Think I'm gonna go with the heat sink, fan & a bigger power supply.

Is this on your current system, if so, then I dont believe you need a new power supply. Did you try and slowdown and stop the fan to hear if the noise goes away?

IDE would be CDROM and or DVD READER/WRITER.

go to www.pcint.co.za , get this :

Motherboard :
[P5VD2-VM] - ASUS VIA P4M890 - R506
CPU:
Core 2 Duo E4300 1.8Ghz (800FSB 2MB) - R1050
Ram :
1GB DDRII-800 (Twinmos) - R455
Total : R2011

They'll ship it to you, for R100 if you're in one of the main centres in the country

I believe with this kind of setup you would need 2 banks of ram due to the dual core technology otherwise you would have a ram bottleneck. The Intel board supports dual bank ram.

If you can afford it go for the E6700 Cache 4MB L2 CPU SPEED 2.66 GHz FSB 1066 MHz. 2 x Dram II (512k x 2)or(1gig x 2). This should make your CPU system fly. The 2 x SATA drives you have should be well matched.

These are the cpu's you should choose from.

Select View the Demo on this page and it will explain all the features.

Have fun with your decision. :D

@cryptic1. So have you found the real problem. You did say it was the CPU Fan?
SO then are you going to upgrade or Fix?
:)

Go for this cpu:
Core 2 Duo E6420 2.13Ghz (1066FSB 4MB)
It's the cheapest 1066fsb version with 4mb cache. You'll be able to overclock it easily to 2.66Ghz then it will give your the same performance as the E6700 at a much better price

Got my IT buddy to drop by with a 500w psu this evening - so ja fix for now but u guys have made me salivate for an upgrade now :) If I were to go for the upgrade then I can only afford the D946GZ mobo & the E4300 processor. But Csnoopy ur suggestion is tops, very tempting.

PS. Don't forget the 2 x Ram Modules & each one goes into a seperate bank. !!

Let us know how it goes with the upgrade. :)

I just got myself an Intel Core2Duo E6420 2.13GHz. I love it to bits, way out does my old Pentium M 1.8GHz =)
