Hi,

I want to buy a 1GB RAM module on the way home for my PC, but I have no idea about al lthe types, frequenices and speeds :( The information I have now is :

  • Intel Celeron D 1.6 E420
  • Gigabyte motherboard

I know the PC is about a year old and has a PCI Express card for graphics. Any ideas? Or should I rather go home, open and get it on Saturday?

Also - 2 x 512 or 1GB ?

Get 1GB, if you need to upgrade later (probably wont though)
or get 2 x 512MB if you won't upgrade, and those are the only one's you gonna use on the Mobo (Should be faster if you running dual channel)

Run Diagnostic Utils to check what speeds your Mobo will be able to handle, like "Everest"

sum1 here will prob. tell you exactly what MHz RAM your mobo is capable of though...

Could also just download CPUz will tell your RAM Speeds :)

Daul channel vs. Single channel = ~1% speed increase rather get 1GB chip to

Yea I actually wanted to pick it up on the way home ;)

But I'll download these things tonight and get the RAM Saturday.

Thanks !

I'd actually reckon u got DDR400 ram in ur current machine

i think it might be either DDR2 800 or 667MHz, as i have the same cpu and my pc is about the same age, and mine is 667

but yes, check with the mentioned program rather

can a 800 module work on a m/b that is 667 i wonder

Wow ... PCWizard is pretty cool. So is my 333 or 666? ;)

Manufacturer : Hyundai Electronics
Part Number : Unspecified
Serial Number : Unspecified
Type : DDR2-SDRAM PC2-5300 (333 MHz) - [DDR2-666]
Format : Regular UDIMM (133.35 x 3)
Size : 512 MB (1 ranks, 4 banks)

Anyone?

Type : DDR2-SDRAM PC2-5300 (333 MHz) - [DDR2-666]

I'm guessing this means I have a 333 chip in a 666 board? Which means, getting any other 512MB chip means I run at 333 only?

So, two 512MB (333's) in dual channel or one 1GB chip (666)?

Faster DDR2 DIMMs are compatible with slower DDR2 DIMMs; however, the faster module runs at the slower module's speed. Using slower DDR2 memory in a system capable of higher speeds results in the bus running at the speed of the slowest memory in use.

does this mean that if i bought a new mobo which only supports ddr2 800 (as it says on the box) and i only have 667 that i can use the 667 and it will run at 667? or does it mean that when you use a 667 chip and a 800 chip that both will only run at 667?

your mobo prob supports 800MHz, so get a 1 or 2 GB DDR2 6400 (800MHz). price diff is like a couple o bucks. just check first on the manufacturer's website or in the manual if your mobo supports it.

afaik the D420 is 800FSB
