Howdy All,

Okay i read through the Grado headphone thread but it didn't really answer my question.

My current HD 570's are getting a bit dated now and want something radical.
I'm looking at the following sennies, my mate is in the states at the moment so my prices are from amazon.

HD 555 - $109
HD 558 - $174
HD 595 - $180
HD 598 - $180

Would you justify the $70 for one of the higher range Sennies, and if so, which pair? I'm not going to open the 555's up and do that little mod so thats out. I've taken quite a liking the the 598's, but are they worth the extra $?

Dankie julle mense

If you can get the HD598 for ~R1300 in the States, then I'd say go for it!

I've got the HD555 (with bass mod) and I'm very happy with it.

I've actually listened to a colleague of mine's HD600 and I liked mine more due to the slightly increased bass, but the comfort level of his was just amazing.

Btw: what sound card / amplifier are you using?

DEF!!!! the 598's... I have a pair and they're wiicked.

But while he is there.. get him to pickup 1 or 2 extra leads. They get worn waay before the headphones.

I'm using the xonar D1. ah leads are cheaper in sa. my current ones I paid R40 from sennheiser Sa so that's no worry.
okay so that's +1 598 :)

oh really? hectic okay that pretty much writes them off the list and makes the decision pretty straight forward.

HD558, unless you can afford the HD598. Look crap though. Otherwise just get the HD595, they look great and have the stand which is very handy.

Does the D1 have a built in amplifier? 6.3mm jacks?

I have HD595 + Xonar Essence STX.

well 558 and 598 are like 10$ difference.
nope no buillt in amp or 6.3 jacks but the sound card boosted my current 570's by quite a huge margin so Ill leave that as is for now. I see 595 also doesn't have removable cord which is a bit of a bummer

Personally I prefer the PC350's but that is because of the mic. Love it for games and VoIp.

I also love those. And bundled with the ASUS Xonar Xense sound card they are a winner i.m.o.

Yeah i looked at headsets but i've never really been a fan of them, prefer something dedicated to sound :) Took the plunge and got myself the 598's. Now i have to wait till sunday :(

Did you order the Essence ST/X as well?

Complete waste of money if you are not using an amplified sound card, particularly one dedicated to 2 channel speakers/headphones.

HD555/Essence combo will sound better than HD598 without an amplified sound card/preamp/etc.

Hope you realise this.

PostmanPot:
Are you really sure that it is necessary to get the Essense ST/X for the HD555/598?

Because the amplification is only necessary for headphones with an impedance of 64 Ohms - 600 Ohms, where as these headphones are only 50 Ohms.

I would really love to hear the difference between my Asus Xonar DX and your Asus Xonar Essense STX with my HD555's.

I'm very sure. I think every in depth pro review I've read says the same. My own personal experiences confirm this as well, where I have tested HD595 via iPhone and 6.3mm old school CD player.

Essence STX trounces them, both in audio quality, detail, bass, loudness, etc.

So I hold the opinion very strongly that buying expensive headphones such as the HD598 without buying any decent sound card/amplification is a complete nonsensical waste.
