Hi. I'm deciding on one of the following: CR-V; Rav4; iX35 or Sportage. If owners of these models could please offer some advice on which to go for taking into consideration service cost and overall maintenance as I do not change/replace my car often.

I would say go for the best in that list the Rav4.
You can never go wrong with Toyota, well built, good quality and unlike the others you will get something
decent for it when it comes to selling/ trading it in

*Fixed*:)
Especially applies to the CR-V 2l FWD.
It has room for everything including the kitchen sink and a toilet!
It loves the open road and the six speed box has the perfect ratios for hills and overtaking.

CR-V and RAV 4 are pound to pound on build quality and they will both stand the test of time since you like keeping your cars longer, thE RAV 4 will fall behind on looks though, that rear looks like a design flaw so if it was my money i would go for the Honda.

What's your budget? Compact SUV CX-5, Kadjar, Qashqai or Sub - Compact SUV Crossover HRV, CX-3

The CR-V - is all well round package with its comfortable, high-quality interior, bulletproof engine, smooth drivetrain & spacious. It did won most reliable SUV, however it is more expensive to maintain than its rivals.

RAV4 - Good resale value, spacious & very reliable, unfortunately, it is let down by a poor interior and it’s clear in which areas Toyota has saved its money. It will be cheaper to maintain.

Hyundai IX35 – Good to drive – steering was a little too light for me, rivals are better to drive. According to Kingsey reports it is more expensive to maintain than its rivals.

Sportage - Very comfortable on road, spacious interior, soft steering and whinny engine noise. Also cheaper to maintain.

Between 300 - 400K. I am first going to try and find a demo (last years model) with low mileage and see from there.

In that case, I would rather go with Mazda CX-5, Nissan Qashqai or Renault Kadjar, they are so much better than the ones you mentioned.

Agree - you cannot go wrong with the Mazda CX-5 beautiful car and drives like a beast.

Another vote for CX-5 - If you're looking for a manual then the only option is already in your price range @ R374k for the Dynamic.

Depends on your specific requirements though.

Latest VW TIGUAN just launched (see October CAR mag and Topcar)
Modern technology coupled with Teutonic practicality. 15000 km service intervals on the petrol versions. 90kW of power from the fuel-efficient (real-world city driving 11 litres / 100km) 1.4 litre Turbo engine. More powerful versions available if that's not enough for you.

Subaru XV - permanent 4x4, excellent roadholding in the wet, a little on the small side inside. Trusty boxer engine. The CVT version is not as popular.

Mazda MX-5 all the mod cons and features, and good to look at. Own-designed Mazda engine - not a Ford.

Renault Duster 4x2 dCI. I recently bought one, its an awesome well priced car. Fuel efficiency is amazing!
