I know smtp.saix.net works from most places (public wifi hotspots).

But will it work from anywhere? e.g. when using WiFi at my friend's place who uses MWEB? Or must I use MWEB's smtp server?

As far as I know some ISP's force you to use only their server eg. vodacom = smtp.vodamail.co.za.

So I don't think that you can just use any smtp server anywhere.

What you can do is make outlook ask you at startup which profile you want to use, and then you can make a profile for each server you're gonna use so that you don't have to manually type it in each time.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I think you can use the Google SMTP server from anywhere as long as you use your login details also. In other words, you need a Google Account.

But if you had a Gmail account, you should be using the Web Page interface anyway... it is better than any e-mail client! :p

I think you're right. I do remember using the google smtp server on my vodacom phone. I think it works because it goes through the ssl port and is secure, so vodacom isn't able to block it.

You can use google's smtp server, but if someone uses Outlook to view the message, it will say From: [email protected] (sent on behalf of [email protected]) . If you're ok with that you can use google's smtp. (BTW: This does not happen in any other email client - only outlook. Once again microsoft  )

Another solution would be to get one of these cheap overseas accounts (check www.bluehost.com) - they allow you to send email (from any "from" address) as long as you enter the username and password they provided for their smtp server. Basically all overseas hosts work like that - at least the one's with Cpanel.

Hope this helps

No - SAIX's SMTP server is only available to users on the SAIX network. That of course includes any ISP that is a reseller of SAIX bandwidth (like MWeb). As soon as you are using a network run by a different ISP you will have to change to their SMTP server... very annoying in my opinion.

If you want a globally accessible SMTP server then you need to arrange and MSA on port 587 with the provider that supplies your incoming mail service. You would use SMTP AUTH and possibly SSL as well to authenticate yourself. Then you won't be restricted by firewall policies blocking port 25 and you'll never have to change your SMTP server.

Its worked wonderfully for me for many years :D

ya i just use, smtp.mydoamin.com, login details and it works everywhere, and very fast aswell.

Most smtp servers will be locked down - if not then they are are mail relays and they will be soon added to blacklist. No one will (should) allow you to send mail if your not from their domain. Opens the server for spamming.
