Which SSD

Thanks guys. Without the forum my son might have grown up without a father and it could have forced my wife into a loveless lesbian relationship!

Nothing super secret you need to now, if you have it make sure it's connected to SATA 6Gb/s and once Windows is installed you can just double check if TRIM is enabled.

Thanks. I read something regarding defraging which should not be done. Also, which is the 6Gb/s connection?

I dont know if there is any way of knowing without checking the BIOS. What motherboard do you have? Most motherboards have all SATA 2 ports or all SATA 3 ports. Not many, as far as I know, have a mixture of both.

Check what SATA ports your motherboard has - if any are SATA 2, you just need to find out which so that you can avoid them.

Oh one more thing. Do you have a spare SATA data cable? Sata drives dont come with any cables. You'll also need a spare SATA power connector.

How are you going to mount the drive? Modern cases have special slots for mounting SSDs, older cases like mine dont and you need to buy an adapter.

Windows will recognise it is a SSD and not allow defragging. Motherboard model?
Ok so I have a msi G31TM-P35 MB which has 4 SATA 2. I think I will keep the SSD in the box for now and just upgrade everything. Seems pointless to put the SSD in such an old machine.

Any website where I can "build" a pc seeing as I dont know which parts fit with what.

Current system specs?

Well, it will still work with SATA2 and you will still get a benefit. You just won't get as much benefit as if you have SATA3.

You could use it now until you upgraded. Just make sure you use at least Windows 7.

I just checked and I'm guessing your PC is old as the mountains seeing as that's a socket 775 board. Work out a budget and I will see what's the best bang for buck system you can get.

I have an old SSD (agility3) on an old G31 mobo in my HTPC and it still makes a massive difference. Not pointless at all.

Take it from me who went through all the research etc and bought over 30 SSD's last month.

I made the following purchases:

Samsung Evo 250 ( Read: Up to 540 MB/sec ) - ( Up to 520 MB/sec ) ( 3D V-NAND )

Why did I take the Evo and not the Pro? Well in all honestly at the price I do believe the Pro is completely overkill with little performance gain above the evo and not worth it.

You can compare the specs here:
Pro - http://www.samsung.com/global/busin...ite/SSD/us/html/ssd850pro/specifications.html
Evo - http://www.samsung.com/global/busin...ite/SSD/us/html/ssd850evo/specifications.html

Corsair Force LS Series 120GB ( Read Speed up to 560MB/s ) - ( Write Speed up to 535MB/s )

Definitely not pointless put I think it's time for a upgrade, Core2Duo and Core2Quad socket 775 was released 11 years ago.

Depends on your needs. My Q8300 (I think) 775 is still doing a great job in my HTPC (with Plex, Kodi, sickbeard etc. etc.). Sometimes I think it's maybe time to upgrade, because I want to, but in reality I don't NEED to.

Ok I will take a look at the budget and let you know thanks for all the help.
