I'm looking at buying an SUV, so far I like the X-Trail, Outlander, Forester, Freelander 2 and CRV.
Without having driven any of them yet, the Freelander 2 is top of the list but may be a little over my budget... gonna do some test driving to see if it's actually worth the extra cost.

Does anyone own an SUV or looked at SUV's recently and have any insight to share?

Are there any good deals/discounts on new or nearly new vehicles going around at the moment?

What do you need it for?
What is your budget?

I have a BMW X1 (petrol), love it...but it is very thirsty.

Korean, Korean, Korean. The AWD 2.2 turbo diesel Kia Sorento offers unmatched value for money, size and performance. Included the best service plan and warranty into the mix.

Want to tow a boat, the occasional trip to Zimbabwe and would like the ability to do some softroading.
Budget is between R350k and R400k.

I actually forgot about the Sorento, will have a look at that too.

Buy a Fortuner - you won't be disappointed.

I've had my 4x2 diesel for 4.5 years now and haven't had a single problem - and I've done plenty of soft offroading in it.

Fortuner 4x4. I just traded my 4x2 for new 4x4.

I'm stuck between a new Fortuner or a new Hilux, and a distant competitor is the new 3.6 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited...

Hilux is top contender at the moment because of the dogs.

How is the fuel consumption on the Fortuner?
I see it also comes in a 2.5l diesel, any experience with it?

I just hired the X-Trail 2.0 turbo diesel for a trip to Ponta do Ouro in Mozambique and I must tell you that it was an absolute pleasure,

The ride was comfortable, there was plenty of power and it's very spacious.

Ask me any questions, I had it for 2000km's.

If I could buy any one on your list, it would be the Forester... but I haven't driven any of them either.

I'm currently getting an average of 10.2km per litre on the new 4x4. On my old 4x2 I got 10.5.

I've heard that the 2.5 achieves close to 12km per litre but it doesn't come with all the features of the 3.0. No cruise control, no auto aircon, no leather.

X-Trail - ugly and dated.
Outlander - very heavy and thirsty
Forester - Good engine and capable, so mundane.
Freelander 2 - the best of the lot but most expensive up front as well as maintenance.
CRV - not to sure

It is worth a look at the Koreans (what unskinnybob said).

My choice would be the new Fortuner.

Is it just me that finds the new fortuner to be uglier than the previous one...? It's looks cheap...could be all the chrome of course.

Japanese, Japanese, Japanese...

Click on my signature - enough said! ;)

When are people going to realise that the Forester body changed in 2008?????! There is NOTHING mundane about the new one!!!

Consider the Ford Kuga. R395k for the most expensive. Ground clearence is a bit low at 188mm tho.
I have a 05 X-Trail and burnt out the clutch in sand towing a trailer in Moz so my next buy will be an auto box, maybe with low range, but we'll see.

It amazes me that Ford would produce an SUV with such lousy ground clearance. The Forester has 225mm and even the Outback which is your proper soft roader has one of 213...
