Home sweet home :)
please give opinions (facts) on which of these systems will be faster for OFFICE USE.

intel pentium 4, 3.4ghz (met HT technology), 512mb ram, IDE hdd

or

Intel dual core 2,66GHz, 512MB ddr ram, sata hard drive

the programs mostly to be running is a couple of sessions of excel and access at the same time with IIS running the intranet in the background and a few other things also.

reason for asking i currently have the first one and i'm wondering if the 2nd one will be an improvement or not?

If that 2.66GHz dual core is the E6700, yes it will be way fast, but if its the Pentium D 805, it will feel about the same. So no improvement.

well if that 2.66 isnt a core 2 duo

i would get an amd 3800 x 2 im sure its faster than a 2.66 dual core

Are you reffering to:
805 Processor - 2.6GHz Dual Core Socket 775 1MBx2 533MHz FSB
950 Processor - 3.4GHz Dual Core, Socket 775, 2MBx2, 800MHz FSB
E6600 Processor - 2.40GHz Dual Core, Socket 775, 2MB, 1066MHz FSB
E6700 Processor - 2.66GHz Dual Core, Socket 775, 2MB, 1066MHz FSB

805 - nice CPU for over clocking (see tomshardware, think they overclocked it to 4.2Ghz)
E6600 - Money wise probibliy the best CPU currently to buy, nothing will come near it. (its about +-R700 more expensive than the 950) It outpreforms all current AMD and other non-Core 2 duo CPU's. (including the Intel extreme)

Yes, going from a 950 to E6600 you will definatly feel the difference, especially if you move from ATA to SATA too. Make sure the new system comes with at least DDR2-667mhz memory.

don't be a *****... just buy an intel x6800 extrem, put it on ice and overclock it to 5ghz... there you can run as many excel program's as you want
