I have a budget of 10k

Which one is better of these two.

Samsung 46" LED FHD ua46d5000

R9999

or

Sony 46" LCD FHD kdl-46cx520 (this tv is not LED)

R8999

Have you tried actually viewing either? A mate wanted a Sony 40" recently but decided to view as many other brands as he could(using his own reference blu-ray disc). Finally settled on a Toshiba because it looked the best to him - forget the spec/reputation/ratings, trust your own eyes!

I agree with the previous poster. Your eyes know best. And in South Africa (as in India),Sony (and Nokia), live mostly on past glory and old fans, more then anything als. If you can afford a LED screen, go for it.

Thanks guys. I'll go with the samsung. I was just wondering why the non led sony was about the same price.

Samsung are the leaders in Display Panel technology - you're not going wrong in choosing Samsung.

Sony is an Internet TV, with advanced BRAVIA engine. Samsung is entry level, non local dimming LED set. Head to head, the Sony is far better for picture quality.

In my experience the Sony panels have always merely been overpriced, but sure - go for the one that looks (picture wise) the best, after all you should have it (the TV) for a long time so want to get the best now rather than later.

I've spent time with the Sony 46" CX520. Not impressed at all. Screen is not bright and the menu's aren't as nice as Samsung. The 46" CX520 is on the same level as all other entry level FHD LCDs.

To add, virtually all Sony LCD TVs are branded BRAVIA these days - means nothing IMO. All brands have their own engines, BRAVIA jsut sells the most because it sounds the best.

Also remember Samsung and Sony have a joint venture in LCD panel production, so they tend to use the same panels.

Furthermore, LED is marketing gimmick and offers same picture quality as LCD, albeit slightly brighter. There are very few true LED TVs, the ones you know are LED back-lit (edge-lit) LCD. Only the back-light differs (LED vs CCFL), the light still passes through the same LCD matrix. Not ever worth the 10% premium.

The real question is, what do you need the TV for?

If SD/sport/motion is a priority then Samsung 51" FHD plasma is the way (PS51D550). If you don't need SD/sport/motion go for a Samsung Series 5 LCD, the LA46D550 is R7,999 and might use the same panel as the Sony 46" CX520.

P.S. Wrong forum.
