Which TV to buy?

Hi all

A friend of mine is looking for a new 40"~ TV and has asked for help on picking one.
I don't have a clue other than that Samsung and LG were good last I checked!
The set would be used for watching DSTV/VHS(omg right)/DVDs and possibly blue-ray.
LED, LCD, Plasma? I don't really know which is currently the best option.
What brand, series or set would you recommend?

For DSTV/VHS and DVDs look at Plasma, their lower resolution better suites SD quality sources.
