Hi All,

Ok in the process of buying a TV to replace my PS42C430.

was a great TV, no issues really, only complaint can be the reflection sometimes on sunny days at specific times.

So far have compared the

LG 42LW4500 and PS43D490 and out of the 2 i would choose the LG, picture was great on both let down on the Samsung was the 3D, there was big time flicker.

For a budget of say R8k what would you suggest? I really like the 3D and the 2D to 3D conversion but suppose i am open to suggestion.

I see PlasmaPot's task is done here, you already want a plasma TV. For that budget I'd suggest you wait, the 2012 models (E series) are coming out in February. Should at least bring the prices of existing D ones down. I was going for a 51D550 myself, they were R8099 but are all sold out now it seems. The sales guy told me the new ones (E550)should be even less than that. The problem with the 490 (and the LG) is the stupidly low resolution really. If you don't mind it, you can always save a few bucks and go with the 490....

thing is i have no issue with a LED LCD or LCD

when in feb will they come out?

i would take the LG over the 490 at this point.

Going to ask a silly question but why the change? Especially since the two you listed are almost identical to the one you giving up? As per TJ99 perhaps wait a bit and get a better specced model.

blown, lightning

Oooh okay that does suck, perhaps use this to get a FHD model ;-)

Mine was fried recently - what can I do to protect against lightning ? UPS ? Are Ellies guaranteed multiplugs infallible ?

Nothing is infallible to lightning, especially those little Ellies plugs, your best bet is unplug during a storm.

Would insurance cover in a storm?

Nope not infallible but if you get the correct Ellie's one with the equipment guarantee (on the power supply side) and do your paperwork correctly then you are covered for any blown equipment registered. You have to ensure that the device is lightning protected on the power line as well as the signal source line. The best is to get lightning protection at the power entry box of your home. You have to be sure that the TV antennae have a proper earth rod and everything is properly wired. You have also to ensure that the home ground or earth is sound. Then your chances of damage in case of a spike up to a certain energy level will be much less. A direct strike can never be catered for.

Those Samsung 3D glasses did give me a headache when I tried it instore but at home my eyes have no issues with it. I spend an hour or so gaming in 3D and have had no issues as yet. Maybe it's the store lighting that made the flicker worse or the glasses used in store doesn't have enough power:confused:

The fluorescent lamps aggravates the flicker as their own additional light frequency plays havoc together with the 3D glasses switching.

PS51D550 at R8,2k or so... Or is space still an issue?

If 3D is a must and flicker is a problem, then the LG 42/47" Cinema LED LCD. Unless you have a look at their 3D plasmas? I'm not even sure if they have 3D plasma's, sorry.

As I've mentioned, knowing you and your wife like DSTV SD, remember that you will likely be disappointed with SD quality on the FHD LED LCD compared to your PS42C430. Perhaps weigh up 3D vs SD? Also, out of interest, how far back did you test? A similar distance to home?
