Which version?

Been using Ubuntu for a while now, years back I tried Red hat and debian.

As my motherboard crashed and I am getting a 64bit cpu/mb I am going to be re-installing everything.

What would you suggest as the best?

Mint has recently been suggested...
 
Do you wan't something simple that works out of the box or do you like building your own ala Arch etc.

Look at Mint, Ubuntu, Fedora, openSuse, PCLinuxOS & Sabaton. Go 64-bit whatever you chose.
 
No time to do own builds.

Out of the box would be better as I need it working pretty quickly.

I think I'll just load ubuntu and then play with the rest in Virtualbox (at least that way it does not destroy my productivity).

Still not to impressed with unity but will use it for a bit anyway (either that or lts version).

More suggestions still welcome as I will be using ubuntu only till I find something more pleasing to me.
 
lol, I like it but am a 1 click kinda guy (and miss my desktop cube).
 
You can set up 1 clicks somewhere, under tweaks I think. Yeah, that cube is :love:...also miss it!
 
Also try Mint. I've found it to be more "out of the box" than Ubuntu. Also, with the Unity teething problems, it may be a better choice for the next 6 months or so.
I think the new version is just about to be released. Personally, I've been running both for a while now. Ubuntu on my desktop, Mint on my laptop. There's really not much to choose between them, except now it'll be Mint for Gnome and Ubuntu for Unity.
 
Yea quite tempted to give mint a go but will only have a chance to download it tomorrow so it will go on a vm for now (got 8GB now so plenty ram to run a couple at once).

I want to click exactly once without dragging my mouse into an obscure corner of the screen to access the 10 to 12 programs I use on average 3 times an hour.

Go for 10.04.* whatever the most recent one is. This is a LTS version, so by the time it "expires" all the kinks with unity hopefully will be resolved. OR use the alternative DVD and just install Gnome, KDE or whatever you are used to
 
I have now tried both versions of Mint, the Ubuntu and Debian based versions.

They are both still Gnome 2.3, but the Ubuntu based version feels more polished.

Mint have not officially confirmed it yet, but rumours are they are sticking to Gnome (Gnome 3 in the future I would presume) but the next release is slated for September IIRC, so a lot of water that can still go under the bridge and many things can still change.

The Debian based distro has one huge advantage over the Ubuntu version in that it is a rolling release distro. If Gnome 3 gets forced on me I'll definately go the Debian way then.
 
Try SuperOS - it's Ubuntu, but with all the extras you would normally install like Flash, AV codecs, etc...
 
LOL, so I installed Ubuntu11.04 x64 on my new i5-2400 based pc and it tells me my hardware is not compatible with unity.
Put me back on the classic desktop.

What GFX card are you using? That is most probably the reason it complained.
