We have 4 branches in SA we would like to connect via a VPN. (We have a web app running on a server in George that needs to be accessed by the other branches.) We were looking at VPN Lite from Telkom but one of the branches is connected via 3G while the others have ADSL. Do you guys have any suggestions for a secure, reasonable priced VPN solution that would accommodate different internet connections.

Put your own firewalls up with this built in at the sites. It shouldn't be to expensive, have a look at Smoothwall. You might even be able to do QoS.

Hi,

The 3 ADSL branches I would use cisco 877 routers with advance security images and ISP that supplies uncapped static addressing for businesses. Setup a site to site VPN between the 3 branches. Also setup a remote dial in vpn on all 3 routers. Then the 3G branch i will use a cheap 3G gateway that supplies internet connectivity to the end devices on the branch. Using the Cisco VPN client i will then setup each end device to VPN into the other ADSL branches. Load balance the amount of users at the 3G branch across the 3 ADSL branches.

i would say go for a professional mpls solutions from your ISP, then its nicely managed for you and you dont have to worry about managing it.

yea a mpls solution from your ISP like magicquin sugested is about your easiest solution, but if you want to manage the connections yourself and mange the branches traffic then get your own firewalls and put them in at each branch. We have about 12 branches around the country and Im currently using Fortigate 50b firewalls at each branch to link to our HO, we have a big fibre line here and i just push all their traffic through the HO so we can manage their traffic and routes to different services.

it all depends on your budget, a fortigate 50b will set you back about 4k so its not expensive at all...

I use openvpn on my 31 remote sites, it accepts any form of internet connection, has compression and has never let me down.
Its easy enough to setup and works across windows/linux/osx etc.
Personally I dont see the need to run hardware devices over a system that runs perfectly and can be managed at a granular level.
I have often had someone connect a usb 3g modem to a server if their ADSL or diginet was down and the vpn restores itself as soon as the 3g connects.
