So our Whirlpool Toploader started leaking and it does not stop automatically when filling up. Contacted the retailer, who came back to us to say that Whirpool only have a 2 year garuntee and warranty. So thats a dead end.

Before I call a repairman, does anyone have a similar experience as to what the issue can be?

Probably, the last time I purchase a Whirlpool. Our smaller Samsung toploader is still working after 15 years.

There is solenoid that checks and stops the water flow. It's a simple mechanism.
A pipe goes into this solenoid, when the water lever rises in the drum inside, by siphon action the water rises in this pipe too.

Same thing happened with mine, I just opened the washing machine and blew in that pipe to clear it off any debris and the problem was solved.
Either this or it's a faulty solenoid

It leaks when filling up. Thinking about your explanation, maybe there is a leak in that pipe, this not activating the solenoid.
