Last night I went to the local whisky club meeting and had a few Feis Isle drams which went down well. I got chatting to the guys and they're pretty keen on tasting some South African whiskeys. I'm not familiar with the local offerings from Three Ships and the like at all, but you guys seem to rave about them so with that being said are there any special releases coming up or specific regular bottlings that you can't just go out and buy on Amazon that you can recommend?

They fed me content of a R10k bottle last night so maybe that's okay. Will keep an eye out.

I do not care what anyone says, but the TSW 5 yrs still remains the best blended peated whisky for under R300.

And Mash Tun is still a really good whisky liquour to mix with gingerbeer, hahahahahaha
 
Odd. Wild About Whisky were updating their "specials" page while I was browsing. I check again now and it's empty. Bottles still seem to be at reduced rates. From memory:

Directly from Ardbeg. I'm in the UK, yes. I'm still finding my feet but also managed to get a Laphroaig Cairdeas Tripple Wood Cask Strength, which is apparently a good one. Missed out on the Port & Wine bottling but such is life.

Then you're very lucky.

One scan ship directly from Laphroaig to SA, but the shipping, VAT and customs are still waiting on this side.

Ardbeg on the other hand does not ship directly to SA, so that is quite the problem. One can use a forwarder but then you pay VAT twice and still have the shipping.

The collector's market is pretty nuts here. Guys travel to Feis Ile to go pick up the "limited" releases there and sell them for huge markups on the auction sites. Personally, not a fan of that line of thought but I suppose it's up to the buyer. At least the distilleries limit sales to a bottle per person, usually.

I've seen CASES of "limited release" Ardbeg's on auction 2 weeks after release.

These distilleries do not give a schit anymore.

Depends. Some of the so-called limited releases come in at 30 000 bottles. So not exactly limited. Others - 500. Completely different ballgame. Suppose it pays to do your research.

Ardbeg do very regular special releases...but not all are limited.

Even their committee release vary a lot re. number of bottles...some 2 000 others 300.

I have yet to see a something punted as a LIMITED release with a 30 000 number of bottles.

I was specifically referring to the Arrrrrrrbeg that was a supposed rare and limited release, but people walked into the Distillery that morning and bought cases of the stuff.

Those same cases were on major auction sites a few weeks later.

I spend 90% of my time doing research and 10% buying...it makes it so much more fun. Living in SA does have its drawbacks when it comes to buying the rarer stuff.

Not that limited always means good....
