Whisk(e)y Lovers thread(II)

Black Bottle is actually Scottish, lol.

A bottle store near me actually still have the old style bottle in stock. I'm not sure if the blend is the same as the new style bottle, (never tried any of them) as they apparently changed the blend and used less Islay whisky in the new blend
Yep you are right, the first Black Bottle (in a green bottle) was more Islay biased than the current bottling. Every-time I find an original bottling I snap it up, really nice easy drinking daily dram.

Benriach 12 (Rachel Barrie release) is an absolute winner and you will find it for less than R500. Don't know if you have tried the Glenmorangie 10 (round the low R400 mark) or even Bains Symphony at R370 but a limited release. For me the winner would be Ardbeg Wee Beastie which is now sub R500, but do you guys like peat?

On the bourbon from, Woodford Reserve is fantastic and <R500, as is Bulleit but you cannot beat JD Rye at round R300 (don't even think that it tastes anything like normal JD, which I can't stand).
Wee Beastie, spot on

Then I will definitely pick one up and try it. I'm still looking for a good budget peated blend that I can rotate with Three Ships 5.

Have tried Scottish Leader Signature recently, not a fan though, the alcohol comes through way too much, although it has quite a bit of peat.

Tried Teachers which is not bad though.

Johnny Red is a no-go, tastes like bunt tires and jet fuel, hahahaha

Nope, 18 Allardice is there as well.
Think wires are getting crossed.

We are talking about the Checkers Private Barrel releases. The Springbank 23 and the Ben Nevis 19 are these PBC releases. The Glendronach PBC is a 20 year and this is the one that is no longer in stock.

Johnny Red goes in the bin

Bains Symphony is awesome, great abv and price. I love the Wee beastie, managed to get it on black friday for R429.

To throw an Irish in, the Tullamore XO rum cask is great and R329 at Makro. For a Bourbon - I still love Buffalo Trace and available under R350

If anyone in JHB spots the Glen Scotia double barrel on sale at checkers please let me know.
I know they moved the old stock awhile ago but im hoping to find another bottle I realy enjoyed it.

Always ask the manager (or someone competent) in the store. They seem to have stuff in the back that they don't put out on the shelf (well, removed from the shelf).

You could also phone around or send them a message on the Checkers EFS site asking for stock levels. They're pretty helpful.

Thanks took some time but I go hold of a manager who did a search and no luck in JHB.

Any recommendations on a good
Japanese Whiskey.

Of course it depends on your budget?

A "good" Japanese Whiskey will set you back a few thousand.

If you liked Nikka, try Hibiki Harmony.

Personally I find most Japanese Whisky's very uninteresting.

The high end SM stuff that isn't blended with Scotish Malt and/or Canadian Whiskey, is quite good, but costs real money.

I have the Hibiki in my cart. Thanks

Save money and buy better Scotch? :D
Haha. Truth. Personally i like the Japanese. By no means a connoisseur and Ill maybe have a glass twice or three times a year.

Recommend a good smooth Scotch please.

So after spending a lot of money on whiskey this year, my friend and myself decided to set a new challenge. To find the best value for money bottle around the R500 mark.

It's been quite enjoyable, we take turns buying a bottle and then trying to convince the other that it's a good value buy - a cheaper bottle scores more "points" if perceived to be good.

We did a few bourbons - makers, wild turkey, buffalo trace, then he did a Tullamore XO and I countered with a Tumnavulin (which at R390 currently impressed a bit). I think he is getting a Shackleton for his round. Outside of the mainstream suspects, what can I get next? Was thinking maybe a benriach curiositas or a 12 yo.

I need to win this, there is a Coal Ila on the table for the winner.
Glen Moray Peated or you can win with Three Ships 5? :\
