Whisk(e)y Lovers thread(II)

I'm referring to the special releases.
ah, right

but the only reason I'd take a chance on an Ardbeg special release is a long history and many bottles of their core range consumed (and samples of prior special releases tasted) building faith that Ardbeg can do no wrong

don't have that history with Kilchoman myself, so won't roll the dice on it at this point in time

Had some interesting drams last night. And I must say: this is the best Balcones I have ever had, hands down.

The Garrison tastes like home-made apple pie. Sweet red apples and cinnamon...with just a hint of oak at the end.

The Balcones was a monster of dried, dark fruits, stewed in Port to have with your leg of lamb on a Sunday...what an amazing dram!

LOL Ardbeg fans are up in arms about the new release sold via NFT only. I've seen many jumping ship vowing to never buy them again. The flippers are ruining it.

Example.

I should have specified I believe Ardbeg can do no wrong with what is inside the bottle

clearly their marketing department is not immune to f-ups, just like (imo) Three Ships' marketing department with the recent 21yr release

Last few years of special releases have been hit and miss in my opinion.
Grooves - wasn't great when first opened. Got better over time.
Drum - tasted at launch. Didn't buy a bottle. Very meh.
Blaaaack - some redemption, this was a good one
Scorch - seemed very similar to grooves for me. Not nearly as good a Blaaaack.

So the point for me is this has averaged as a R1500 bottle the last few years. For that money I expect a bit more. I'm also predicting R2000 for ardcore. The combination of marketing BS and average releases has me looking to spend my money elsewhere.

I saw one at a shop in the East rand quite a while ago. Going to be around that side tomorrow, DM me if you're interested. Was cheaper than WhiskyShop
