If you like Irish, I would recommend Redbreast 12y for under 2k, fantastic dram in my opinion. Not really a big Whiskey drinker; drink of choice is usually Jameson Select Reserve. Any recommendations? Priced below R2k; celebrating and mourning
If it’s with other people who aren’t big whisky nerds, then maybe Macallan 12? People automatically will think it’s super fancy, and it tastes good - https://www.makro.co.za/beverages-l...sk-whisky-1-x-750-ml-/p/000000000000356498_EANot really a big Whiskey drinker; drink of choice is usually Jameson Select Reserve. Wildly over-priced for what you get. Two years ago this was going for R750 (which even then was on the high side of what it was worth)If it’s with other people who aren’t big whisky nerds, then maybe Macallan 12? Depends on what you are looking to spend and what you like. My personal choices on the non-peated side are:Recommendations?

Tamnavulin is definitely a good recommendation vs priceDepends on what you are looking to spend and what you like. My personal choices on the non-peated side are:
R500 - Tamnavulin Double Cask
R750 - Glenmorangie Lasanta
R1,100 - Glenfiddich 15
R1,400 - Bruichladdich Classic Laddie
And on the peaty side:
R1,000 - Laphroaig Quarter Cask (more heavily peated) or Bowmore 15 (more lightly peated)
R1,800 - Lagavulin 16 (king of whiskies in my opinion)
Prices are estimates as they can range quite a bit depending on where you buy.
smokey cokey
although I wouldn't throw quarter cask with coke
Benriach 12.Recommendations?
Agree, Benriach 12 is probably the best value for what you get and still only just over R500Benriach 12.
The price increases are insane, if you wanted something like Macallan 12 I'd suggest Glendronach 12, it's just better. Benriach 12 is a really good whisky and also much better than Macallan 12. That said most people know Macallan as a brand.
It has shot up so much in priceGlendronach 12
yeah price increases these days are crazy across many brandsIt has shot up so much in price
Not to mention the 15yo![]()
It must be that someone is making more money that side or the duties increased. Still around the R1600 over here. This was May last year when I bought, now looking around R2400. Nice ~70% increase in a year
