Jake White is set to step down as South Africa's national rugby coach if the Springboks triumph in this Saturday's World Cup final against England.

In an interview with The Star newspaper, White said the title of world champions had been his ultimate ambition ever since he took over three years ago and he was cool on the idea of being moved upstairs after the tournament.

"What can I say? When I took over as coach, I said that I really wanted to win the World Cup," he said.

"That was part of my first speech to the guys in 2004 when I got the job. If this group wins, it is the most I can achieve."

Run, Jake, run like the hounds of hell were after you! I don't blame the guy, this way he can never be fired (seems to be a sport in its own right in this country).
 
White has been a frequent target of sniping by provincial rugby administrators and has been come under fire from central government over the continued dearth of black players in the team.

Actually I read a whole article yesterday, waiting for my serviced car, by Tim Noakes. He blames the coaches for most of the failures. Explains Australia's specialised coaches in all sports for all different positions, especially former players. Also that golf in this country does so well because of the involvement of Gary Player. In fact, with the specialised skills of Jones in the coaching line up, is a huge contributing factor to us getting to the RWC finals...

Politically *cough* 'correct' Pieter De Villiers.

There are some good international coaching jobs on offer these days. Jake wont struggle and will command a good price should he wish to continue coaching or maybe a higher position on offer locally.
The face of SA rugby is set to change dramatically after next weekend when the politicians intervene.

It will be sad to go from RWC Champions to minnows in 4 years. Just look at Zim cricketing...

Sport instils huge patriotism. Losing that, will mean losing this country. The coloureds still support NZ in rugby and Aus in cricket to this day. It will be a sad day when the rest of us must join them - coming from a proud history of rugby and cricket.
 
The exodus of experienced players is going to happen, that much has been stated in the media with the contracts that were on offer and accepted. SARU then made some pathetic ruling out of spite (IIRC) that foreign based players would be excluded from Bok selection.

If the politicians force through what they say they want to then there will be an definite decline in standards for some time, DeVilliers himself has already made excuses for upcoming poor performances.
The Aussies and the Kiwi's bitched and moaned about us sending a second team overseas for this years tri-nations, wonder what they will say when there is a forced quota of 10 players of colour in any starting 15, regardless of skill, no matter what?

Interesting times ahead.
I always love to hear the politicians shout about how players are still being excluded based on race and the system, I just wish they would name them ;)

Ja, Jakey would be much sought after if he wins. (But also if he doesnt)

Will be good for Jakey to go overseas and coach.

As for that scumbag Eddie Jones - you Saffers can have him, but dont think he'll take you to the finals of the next WC, because that wont happen. For starters, Eddie wouldnt last 4 years.

Aussies just need to sort out their front row, they have plenty talent left.

Eddie has contributed a lot.
Actually saw him on telly passing on a lot of credit to Alistair Coetzee (the official Bok backline coach) saying that he just added some finishing touches ;), pretty much what we have needed for many years, but nice of him to share the spoils.

Eddie was always a outspoken rival but whenever they had him on Boots 'n All over the years he really provided a completely different view to what we were used to hearing and it was interesting to listen to his analysis.

Well, they won't be selected if they played in SA. So would they give a ****? :confused: :mad:

"There is a sense of destiny about this team because no other side in world rugby plays with the same pressure. After this tournament, massive political pressure is going to be exerted to pick a Springbok side based more on colour rather than merit. This is a huge unspoken motivation for them - to show that they deserve to keep their team."

White, whose position has been called into question repeatedly in his homeland, believes even a World Cup win "will not buy me any more time. But what it will do is buy South African rugby some time to work out if it is smart enough to hang on to this group of players and move on together for the sake of the game in the entire country. This is an immensely bright group of guys and they know the stakes. They're playing to win the World Cup - but they're also playing for the future."

i disagree with jake. the most jake can still achieve is by defending the cup after winning it.

And deal with all that bureaucratic bs? IMO rugby in this country is going one way after the RWC and Jake is close enough to know it. He is not willing to put up being coach of a second string "window dressed" squad that couldn't beat USA let alone win a world cup.
 
Well money talks, we will see how they manage if the spectator support wanes unless the stupid GOV plan to fund this via taxpayers money via forced BEE company deals! Nothing is out of the ordinary for these fools.

Pity the government can't support their fat cat a$$es without the assistance of a pair of crutches. I fail to see the money going into rugby.
