Who has had Fibre installed in a complex?

Who has had fibre installed in a complex? is it difficult to get done?

I have been involved in getting fibre into both of the complexes I have units in.

Due to it being common property, you will in all likely hood need to have the complex commit and work with a provider. Vumatel did the one complex as we are in a Vumatel area, the other complex was done with SADV, as DFA terminates right outside the complex.

You will need tow work with your body corporate and make contact with a supplier via them. I do not know of Telkom pulling fibre into a complex for 1 unit.

It gets tricky, as some installers want financial commitment from the complex, which has its own issues with regards to improving the complex, while other do not require anything other than a form of commitment from a specific amount of residents. The later has less legal consequences for the Body Corporate, as no money is spent by the complex.

The best option is to show interest of Vumatel or one of the other fibre providers, as they will get it done before Telkom possibly.

Telkom/Openserve (Huawai seems to be the contractor) is installing fibre in Clubview, Centurion and surveyed our complex for fibre installation. They would like permission to trench in quite a few places and require permission from the body corporate to do so. Before we grant permission, we would like to understand a few things first as we are quite clueless:

- Would the network Telkom install be an open access network (my understanding is that this means we can use any ISP?)
- If the body corporate would like to install security cameras on the complex boundaries and at the entry & exit gates, would we be allowed to use the Telkom network for that? Security cameras would be monitored in our guard room and the entry gate camera could be integrated with our gate access system perhaps.
- If the body corporate cannot use the newly installed fibre network for its own purpose too, would it be worthwhile to approach another company to install the network in the complex and connect to the openserve network outside the complex? I am specifically referring to cost in this point. I would think it can be very expensive.

Any pointers would be greatly appreciated so the trustees can make the correct decision to the benefit of all owners.

The body corporate at my complex are in a similar situation, and we're looking at options. See my answers below, I don't have all the answers, I'm afraid, but what I have I have put down.

Extremely doubtful. I would not count on it.

Using the fibre for your own purposes might be a fair bit more complex than you'd think.

We had vumatel come through, and their proposed installation was unacceptable to the body corporate (it would adversely affect the look of our complex). We're in negotiations with them currently. OpenServe/Telkom appear uninterested at this point. We shall see...

My suggestion would be to get as many people to quote on it as possible, then compare. Quoting should be free from a lot of them.

We also have telkom in the area (in fact we have a their box already in the complex), but they don't seem as interested as vumatel. Ultimately we might go with them, as they appear more willing to reuse existing conduits, so if you document your experience, it might be helpful to us or others.

Hopefully others have more info.

We'll be getting into this process at our block soon too. (Cape Town)
We'll have access to both Octotel and Telkom.They are busy laying the cables in our area at the moment.
A number of owners also already use a wireless service that will also be migrated to fibre service due to the existing take up.
I am keen for Octotel, but we'll see how it pans out

Vumatel is currently installing in our complex. We had an interrested resident (not a trustee) offer to run with it for us and he kept nagging and negotiating and we just helped him out when he needed it by giving permission and assisting with the comms from vumatel to residents and owners. We where hoping to get it last year but after Vumatel did a survey of the complex on who would sign up it was found that we had less interrested people than other nearby areas and as such we where lower down on the priority list to get Fibre. After about a 6 to 9 month wait we have now finally had them start installing. Hopefully we will go live sometime in April. Vumatel where fairly proffessional the whole way through but their sub contractors who have been laying the conduit and paving after done have not been great. Have had to escalate them several times for shoddy work, not sticking to agreed communicaiton rules before cutting off units, etc. Still, so far most people are still willing to put up with the fuss to get the fibre.

Even those who want to remain on ADSL are fairly happy as we have a fairly congested telkom exchange and the more people switch over the better the ADSL experience is especially on weekend evenings when our contention ratio could spike.

The general consensus is go with Openserv only when you don't have another option, there are many reasons for this
