Currently there are a number of telecoms capex projects.

Not only has Telkom announced a massive planned capex spend, but SNOt is rolling out their systems.

Furthermore Vodacom and MTN are rolling out the latest in super 3G, with Cell C expected to follow in the future.

Then we have iBurst growing and Sentech needing to replace the countries broadcasting system.

There is a general complaint about a severe shortage of skilled technical workers, especially in the construction sector.

Who is going to install all this planned capex?

Lol @ Ar

They'll probably import 200 uber cheap japenese/indian teams and then once the job is done replace them with nigerian workers spearheaded in companies with BEE management and claim it was an awesome AA and BEE excercise. Then when the infrastructure starts to fall apart due to lack of maintenance they'll quicky hire the japs/injuns to fix it again ... we'll just keep on paying.

So Telkom is going to ditch their aging ATM network for an all IP one.

Juniper, Cisco, Huawei, Siemens, Alcatel will probably all get bits and pieces of the contract.

CellC is still making hippy friends and thinking SMS is the next big thing, so I dont think we can expect anything from that pathetic bunch, besides making hippy friends with their casual chat or sms thingy or whatever they are doing. Actually makes me think of a battlefield where VC and MTN has already left, and Cell C is scraping for the last leftovers. CellC is like a "Home Shopping Network" item, you buy it (them getting a licence) and then two days later you think by yourself...did i really need this, cause its not doing what i expected.

I stand to be corrected by I thought Telkom already runs IP network over ATM. Think they'll gonna have to replace ATM with MPLS...they stuffed that up a few years back when they opted for older ATM networks instead of MPLS. Now they gonna pay for their mistake but pass on the expenses to consumers.

There's also the MTN's own switching network. They put out a call for tenders a few months ago. Haven't heard anything since.

Thanks for the correction there ... meants MPLS ... but in Telkom's defense it was the correct choice way back then as everybody thought at that time that ATM was the solution little knowing that new technology available later would make it rather obsolete.

A crystal ball is a nice thing to have :D.
