Who own the ONT

Hi Guys
Hope everyones doing great...

If I opt for a month to month contract with my chosen ISP and decide to pay the instalation fee and the activation fee upfront and also use my own router, When i decide to cancel with them , who does the ONT belong too? can they remove it from my house? and my new chosen ISP will have to install a new ONT ?

No you cannot remove the ONT. It will be linked to that address.

If you move and go to another apartment - if that apartment has fibre it will have its own ONT, if not you will need to do the installation again.

The router will be yours but the ONT and fibre line will be a fixture

in my case if you sign a 24 month deal then the ONT is yours

The ONT stays. Mine is clearly marked Vumatel. If you paid for installation you paid to get it into the house. Thats it.

I understand that they own it if you on a 12/24 month contract with them , thats how they recoup the instalation cost, but if i wanted to be on a month to month and pay the instalation cost , then do they still own the ONT or do I ?

ONT belongs to the address you pay to have it installed, so if you move then try recoup the upfront costs from the new tenant if that's the concern.

Neither the ISP or you own the ONT. It belongs to the fibre provider such as vumatel or openserve. whether you pay for it outright or do a month to month it still belongs to the fibre provider.

that is why if you go month to month from the get go , the ISP ties you into a 12 or 24 month contract (to basically recover the cost of the installation). If you opt out of the contract period before it ends, all the ISP's will have written in their contracts that you need to pay the installation fee back again.

What im paying for upfront (Initially) is for the FNO or thier contractor to install the cable from the road to the house and install the Termination Point. The TP them conects to the ISP's ONT or FNO's ONT , and the ONT then connects to my Router.

No the ONT (White box on the wall where the cable termination point is connected to) still belongs to the fibre provider.

The ISP does not own any network hardware. all network hardware (ONT, CPE etc) are all owned by the fibre provider. That is why you will get their logos on the boxes such as openserve, Vumatel, frogfoot etc.

What you are paying for initially is the installation of said hardware to the house - the hardware still belongs to the fibre provider

if you do it on contract, the ISP pays for the installation of said hardware to the house - the hardware still belongs to the fibre provider. (The ISP will pay for this as it guarantees them a client for a specific period 12-24 months, however this is why in the contracts they will have a clause telling you that you need to pay the installation fee back again if you cancel the contract before the contract period is up).

No matter which way you look at it, the ONT/CPE and other hardware and fibre line belongs to the fibre provider.

The ONT serial number will be linked to that address you are staying at and cannot be moved.

Ja. It's part of the cable. Much like the old Telkom phone plug was. Stays at the premises.

It can be moved to another location on the same property but I think you will pay same again as per the initial installation. This usually happens when building renovations has to take place where the ONT is originally installed.
