Today was simply great, after years of being stuck on 56k, I finally moved to something better DSL384k. Telkom came and installed a new line early yesterday and the whole day everything was fine. That is , everything was fine until I started trying to play some CS. I'm currently having a small problem, Pings don't stay constant, I play for a few minutes at pings of 50ish (which is great for my 56k based lifestyle) and then suddenly my ping times start spikeing between 250 and 800 for a few minutes. So I dropped the idea of playing CS and decided I am just gonna abuse my cap some more, that was until I noticed my downloads also going great for a while and then suddenly everything starts spikeing between 0 and 5 kb/s. The Bandwidth Monitor Pro Graphs look ridiculous on my gateway, my 56k spiked a lot , but not as much this. After reconnecting everything seems fine for a while and then it starts doing the same old thing again, if anybody has experienced this please tell me who I need to strangle :D ;) to get this working.

Thanx

Sorry, I cannot help, but I can suggest that you join us in the broadband testing effort- more info in the link in my siggy.

I just tried playing some more CS and things arent looking very good, I play for about 2 maybe 3 minutes and then it starts pinging about 500 (this is if the server doesnt ping around there when i view the server list in steam in which case I dont even bother joining)

*edit : at least my download speeds are ok *

You've probably checked for this, so forgive me if you have already done the stuff below ... but it sounds suspiciously like some malicious spybot stealing your bandwidth. Are you running a firewall? - a must have - with an always-on connection. You'll be surprised at the number of malicious attacks out their. Also, make sure you run something like Ad-aware - http://www.download.com/3000-2144-10045910.html?part=69274&subj=dlpage&tag=button

Good point, actually it should be the first point everyone makes / question asked- these days I just assume that everyone knows they need a firewall- even people on plain old 56K dial-up. It is surprising how many people don't have up-2-date a/v s/w, don't have a f/w of any sort, and don't know what malware is & what they need to stay free of spyware & adware.

[thread=16255]If you don't already have decent Antivirus & Firewall software, then this might help, then again it might not help[/thread]...

Yip, that was one of my first thoughts, my gateway has seen ie opened about three or four times in its life since I would rather use my system and last week saw a total reinstallation of XP and all my apps just to get my system "cleaned up". After checking though, the short answer is no spyware. If only it was spyware then this problem would be easily fixed :( at least my firewall hasnt ever given problems.

*edit : oh wonderfull I'm getting about 12kb/s maximum*

Sorry for double - posting , but I am going to start going into spasms and hurt myself :(

I'm not even runnning any downloads, my bandwidth monitor proves this as it is idle, if I ping 1000 to my ISP, I can't even think about playing games or anything else for that matter.

It must be a problem on your side somewhere - possibly an issue with your DSL modem/router ? What modem are you using ?

The crappy Marconi USB modem , going to go exchange it for the crappy Marconi Router on saturday, the reason why I think it isnt on my side, is the fact that it works fine for a while and then suddenly it gets worse

this is an extract of a ping i just did (more than half of it is fine but as you can see it works fine for a while and then pings get worse. I also tried the latest Marconi Drivers but nothing solved the problem

ok, they kind off fixed it - technician said he remade 3 connections at the exchange, my noise on the phone line is gone and i played games for the last 2 maybe 3 hours no problem, suddenly though, it's back :( There's noise on the line again and the same old thing while i play games. All I can say is WTF :(

Seriously, are there any telkom vans parked-off in your area, they might be mucking about on a pole close by!

lol , I hope it's that.

After it started doing the same thing again, they called me back to find out if I was satisfied or not so I stated my problem again and another guy phoned me just after 16:00 informing me that the line tests perfectly fine and there is no problem on their side :( . I hope this gets sorted out, I enjoyed my few hours of cs to the extreme today but this is ridiculous.

Your line speed is approximately 27.7 Kbps or 3.4 kBytes/sec
( Where kb = kilobits and kB = kiloBytes )

That is what just got returned by the line test without any other downloads running, I'm gonna try reconnecting, hopefully it works

*after reconnect : Your line speed is approximately 351 Kbps or 43 kBytes/sec
( Where kb = kilobits and kB = kiloBytes )*

I can almost guarantee it's a modem problem.

As far as I know, if the quality of signal of line isn't good enough on ADSL, it just won't connect or will have constant disconnects. Considering your using Telkom for an ISP and so am I and I'm getting normal service ... ?

Besides, you should always avoid USB only modems :D - PPPoE is the way to go for ADSL.

I'm going to exchange the modem for a router on saturday morning, I don't know why I didn't get one in the first place - stupidity on my part.

It's not necessarily the modem. Try doing a tracert to the server and take note of the latency between hops. I had a similar problem where the first two hops through the telkom network were giving latencies of anything between 50ms - 1500ms. This should typically be under 20ms.

Of course if you try explain that to the techies at telkom you get ..
1) ADSL is not a guarenteed service
2) asked to do a speed test - this is a latency issue!!!

Hope you have better luck than me. I spent at least 4 hours on the phone speaking to different ppl from TelskomSA.Net to ADSL tech support to Fault services, each one pointing the finger to the other.

same reply from the techie that was just here

adsl is not a guarenteed service
do the speed test

On "My problem isn't the speed but the pings not staying constant" he replied with "Your what?". Also as usual it just works fine whenever a techie comes to check it :(

Seems to have been the modem, I exchanged it fo the router now and everything seems to be working perfectly

:( the whole weekend was fine and today at 15:35 it started again t least it went away by 18:00 , i guees there must be a lot of traffic at that time of day in the contention group i get connected in :( oh well, starting next monday i wont be at home until 7pm so it shouldnt be a problem

I experience the same issue playing RoN. Somedays it works the bomb other's it's dismal at best. In my experience it tends to get really bad when the East Coast of the US wakes up.
