Who won the Xbox vs PS2 battle?

Can we go back to the original topic, just for a sec? Dolby consider that it's not who won, but how they won.
PS2 was:
Out first by a year
Cheaper
Had more exclusives
Was the chosen development platform of most third parties.
(had terrible reliability problems in the beginning)
roll on xbox 360 and we have:

Now you want to discuss history repeating itself? How about the fact that no console that started selling for more than $500 has ever been successful? (3DO, atari jaguar etc etc) How about Sony's disastrous track record with proprietary formats? Betamax, MiniDisc, Memory stick, UMD ...
Frankly I think banking on history is where Sony went wrong. By the time PS3 hits profitability ('09-'10) Nintendo will likely be ready with the next Wii which will probably still be $250 - probably be about the same price as the PS3 by then, will be more advanced and be profitable out the gate. That warning goes for Microsoft as well, at least their forecast are looking better, but they better have a plan for Wii2.

The PS3 will win this generation. The PS2 install base still increases everyday eventually those sony faithfull will pick up the ps3 (most likely when the price drops significantly) this will result in the ps3 outselling the x360 as well as the "xbox720" just as the ps2 is currently outselling the xbox360. Sure Sony might seem like they are struggling, but they still lead the console war. PS3 might be struggling for now, but not for long!

I find it hard to believe that the PS2 would be outselling the 360. Sure Sony has put out a "ceramic white" PS2 to try and push sales but theres no way the PS2 is currently outselling the 360.

No to abe's credit, the one thing that is correct about what he just posted is that the PS2 has been outselling the 360, at least up until a few months ago. The rest is utter flag waving c@rp.
More to the point and the point of my 15 seconds of fame on Lazygamer, is that 360 software (even without Halo) outsells everyone else and has for ages. (Even the PS2, Wii and DS) That's why they get exclusives so easily and why the likes of Square Enix are very keen to get a piece of the pie.
I think the Arcade will give a fair boost to console sales, but may also dilute that Attach rate somewhat.

Well my bad then. But it just shows then that Sony is definitely doing something wrong in marketing the PS3 when a previous generation console still has more appeal.

How much would it cost without built-in Blu Ray?
I think it would probably be cheaper than the xbox, having said that I would never take it out. I dont care a stuff for the whole bluray movie thing but I do think the extra storage space for the games is going to be a advantage that will start to show itself more and more!

On a technical point, no it wouldn't. Check the iSupply numbers. BR only accounts for ~$120 of the $900 it costs to manufacture a PS3. There's still the proprietary Cell, the RSX chip (oh wait that's discounted old stock), WiFi, HDD, and until recently the GS chip.

Dolby: this whole argument is about as productive as asking "Who won the the 1984 Toyota Corolla vs VW Beetle battle?". They're merely stats, no one is going to care that their 2007 Corolla has some distant relation to the 1984 version. Talk in todays terms, don't cry to me cause you got no 7th gen console
