Hey guys,

I have a 10MB line from Telkom and a 10MB unshaped ISP account. My router is telling me my max attainable speed is approx 10MB but yet I am only syncing at 6400. Any ideas why this is happening?

I have attached me line stats:

your SNR and Attenuation are very bad, you're damn lucky to have 6400kbs. that estimation is just an estimation.

Your router says that is as fast as it can go before the line would disconnect randomly/entirely. You would rarely ever be able to attain max rate unless it is due to that being the max rate of ADSL.

I agree with the above poster saying you are lucky to have that rate, would have thought your max at 4mbps.

Telkom has decided to sync at this rate, because it is about the maximum speed that it will remain stable.

Hmm that sucks! I used to sync at 8MB and in the past month or so it seems to have dropped to 6.4 =( My line is quite stable though - hardly ever disconnect so I guess I'm lucky!

Thanks bud - I'll try a shower one and see what results I get!

Telkom could have automatically dropped your downstream speed of your line if it picked up that your line had dropped frequently.

You can phone them and request them to increase your sync speed profile to 8 or 9Mbps.

There's an issue in Durban. I see you have the exact same issue as i am, was fast but now the speed is decreased over the last few days? when did you notice it? what exchange? Telkom technician said he's gonna fix the problem in our area... lets hope.

He should np, there is something wrong with the line due to the low SNR.

Indeed there is, It is quite low for a 4mbps line. He will be borderline stable on 8-10mbps.

It is probably corroded copper somewhere along the line or there is electrical interference where the cable runs.

Did not want open new thread, but would I be able to get 10mb or close?

Yes you will more than likely. You are currently on G.DMT mode. When they transfer you to ADSL2+ then your attainable rate should go up. In fact with a DS attenuation of 30dB as you have, you should be able to get closer to 15Mbps, but since your noise margins are a bit low so you might even be a bit hard-pressed to get 10

I'm sitting on 15mbit sync on my 20mbit line.

Quite frustrating as for the week it worked flawlessly syncing at 20mbit, real world 17mbit download and 20ms pings.

Now, 2 months later it syncs at 15mbit, 11mbit real world and local pings of 40-100ms... TWO MONTHS!

My noise of 6db (borderline) that I get used to get on 20, I now get on 15. Getting worse and worse :(

I have seen the same happening with me. For some reason a port reset did the trick for me.
