Why Apple’s AirPower mat failed

Apple has cancelled its AirPower charging mat, surprising users who were hoping to buy it.

This is the first time Apple has cancelled a “launched” product under current CEO Tim Cook, and while the product wasn’t expected to rival the sales of the company’s flagship products, it was highly anticipated by many customers.
 
I reckon that is the first Apple product that I've seen and thought, yeah, that is a good idea.

Oh well, I'll just wait for the Chinese equivalent for android.
 
It failed because some people like having stupid cables everywhere :mad:

Suppose it "worked" just not really.
 
China ain’t going to be making this either. It’s limited by how the technology functions.

Multiple coils in close proximity creates a ton of heat and noise, which can interfere with things like pacemakers and hearing aids.

So much for this being a technology site - they couldn’t even include some level of technical insight.

It is alternatives, it is not the same thing. Airpower would have needed to have close to 30 coils to function the way they were pitched when announced. Airpower would have been quite the accomplishment if they could pull it off. A mat that you can put 3 devices on without having to align your product just right. The mat would choose the coil closest to you and then charge your device with the appropriate one. it would then also wirelessly communicate the status of each product on the mat to your iOS device.

The fact is, that if you want to do that - the technology isn't mature enough. Might be the reason the wireless charging on the iPhone was limited to reduce the heat when you want to run a lot of multiple coils simultaneously.

Functionally the same thing yes, but there was a promise of more. I was actually waiting for AirPower before I upgrade to my next iPhone. After my expectations with the Galaxy S3, I wasn't going to jump the gun again on something I expect and then not get it a year in.
