Why are LED TVs less expensive than computer monitors in RSA?

This is something I have been wondering about for a while

If you compare similar sized LED TVs to LED monitors - you almost always find that the TV which also contains an additional TV receiver over and above the circuitry a normal LED monitor contains with no TV receiver in it; is far less expensive than the LED monitor.

For example a Hisense LED TV will cost you less than a Hisense LED monitor of the same screen size and resolution - both are locally manufactured.

Surely it should be the other way round? LED monitors without TV receivers should be a lot cheaper than LED TVs...

So why is it the other way round in RSA? And considering how many people dont pay TV licenses anymore and probably dont even watch TV anymore, TVs should cost more than monitors as there is hardly any market left for them.

TV receivers cost next to nothing. Actually will cost them more to exclude them just for certain markets.

I'm sure its cheaper to omit a TV receiver from a LED screen if its a modular component. which again means the monitor should be less expensive. Read the article Lupus posted.

So we're being ripped off with monitor pricing...

More than 50% of your salary is not enough for this government they want it all for their pockets.

Yes, Ad Valorem is killing the price of monitors.
 
I don't have the technical knowledge to back this up - but in my experience the picture quality of a monitor is way better than a tv... do they use the same panels?

I've plugged my PC into a 32" full HD tv and into a 32" full HD monitor and somehow the monitor just looks much better, has to be a different panel with better refresh rate or something....
 
Full HD is full HD, if what you are looking at was recorded in Full HD, and you are using the same HDMI cable for both....the rest is subjective perception.

If the LED monitor screen and LED "TV" screen has the same tec spec (response time etc) and screen size - you will get the same results.

Furthermore there should be a growing market in SA for smart monitors - without any TV receivers in them.

If you take Hisense as example again, the manufacturer is totally capable of building LED screens with a 1ms response time. But its not required in all applications. Especially not for simply streaming content in Full HD or higher and using it for normal admin work.

You would not typically buy a LED TV or a standard office LED monitor for gaming, but buy a gaming monitor instead, but for streaming entertainment standard response times already reached by standard office LED monitors and LED "TVs" (a LED monitor with a TV receiver built in) is more than adequate.

Because the TV market is different to the Monitor market.
TV's generally lose value much quicker than monitors. Actually, the price of monitors rarely decrease.
Regardless of the technology that is being used, it comes down to the fact that it is in a different market category.

Having tested this in the past it boiled down to this, which is called out in that reddit link:
Main reasons evoked are pixel density and refresh rate
TVs often have low pixel density and displaying at non-native resolutions look like garbage.
But to be fair, I haven't tried this in years so who knows, maybe it has gotten better

Pixel density should be the same, the one issue is lag, though I guess putting it into pc/game mode might fix that

They are not the same.

I'm going to go with the fact that monitors on average are smaller than TVs, but a 4k monitor at 32" will be the same as a 32" 4k TV, seeing as they will be generally the same amount of pixels.
But of course a 50" TV will have a lower ppi as it's bigger so the 8 million pixels will be spread a bit more.
