I've been buying shares in Companies with some extra cash I have and till now all of them have gone down.

I bought Shares from the following companies:

Dimension Data
Discovery
Satrix 40
Telkom SA
Vodacom

Should I just leave them?

Just hang in there. The market should turn at some stage. I've also got some shares in most of those companies, but I'm in it for the long run.

Cheerz!

Excluding Satrix, you generally don't buy blue chip shares for short-term investment gains. Unless of course you're investing in derivatives or day-trading the stocks...

how long have you held them(when did you buy in?) satrix fini has almost doubled in value in the last 18months

Markets are on their way down. S&P index is in a downward slopping channel and needs to break 1060 in the short term and 1100 in the long term before anything starts going up. While this market remains under the 200ma and 50ma consider the markets very bearish. China is creating a their own bubble and they have long been considered to be driving the recovery. US houses are looking at another 15% - 20% drop before any recovery there.

If you dont need the money just leave the shares. Else dont expect to see much returns for at least another 2 years.

Sorry.

Thanks for all the responses guys. I just bought them a while ago. Is it a good time to buy shares in the next couple of months?

Mine did a 5.6% gain from 8am till 5pm ... :)

What do you guys think about Telkom stocks? I think if they can sort out their **** you would be able to make a massive profit.

What is the procedure for getting money out of Satrix 40? I have quite a bit of money in there and I'd like to take some out to help with costs involved with moving houses.

Makes me a sad panda when I look in there and I've got less than what I started with :( Would have been doing better if I just left it in my Marketshare account.

Telkom now is extremely high risk, which of course can be extremely profitable.
their asset base is rotting (depreciating) away and being stolen daily, though, this is the nature of a telecoms company.

DD got bought by a Jap company.
Telkom and Voda havent been doing well at all for quite a while...
Discovery as well, thats why they introducing all these new products... I actually see/hope they fail.

Why didnt you buy SAB?? Dude recession and alcohol go hand in hand :p

Why look at companies that are on the radar for M&A's?

Companies are holding a lot of cash at the moment. So if they are not employing they are looking to acquire other businesses. Take a look at 3Par not nearly worth that much yet 2 giant tech companies(Dell & HP) want to be heavily involved in cloud computing.

If you have the time to research and have a read through the business day everyday you can get in fairly early on these stocks.
