Huh? Why? They have far less components than hard drives... and were supposed to replace hard drives pretty much.
But they are still prohibitively expensive.

Because most product pricing has almost nothing to do with input costs and everything to do with milking the consumer.

That's not entirely true, depends how deep your pockets are. Samsung currently sells 15TB SSD drives for enterprise applications, but you pay $10k per drive. They have a 60TB drive on the way which far exceeds the storage capacity of traditional spinning disks.

Too bad Western Digital stopped making the Black 2 Dual Drive.

It was a 120GB SSD and a 1TB HDD on one 2.5" drive. Shows as 2 separate partitions in Windows.
