Legit question, idk anything about veterinary protocols. But humans are alcohol swabbed before and after being injected to prevent infection. But dogs I saw a vet injecting dogs compilation, and they just pull the back of the neck up, inject and leave then it's done.
I'd think dogs are dirtier than people? So why no cleaning of the area pre or post injection?

Dogs eat shchit and roadkill and lick their own arses...do you really think they'll get an infection from a jab?

Most dogs have 2 layers of hair...you gonna wipe through all that onto the skin?

I edited your post...

It might be the case that for patients in hospital where they're already quite compromised in some way, the swabbing is to reduce introducing any additional stressors into their system. For a person going to see a doctor it doesn't seem to matter that much swab or not, but it probably just makes sense to always swab as a general practice so that when it's necessary (hospital etc.) it's already habit.

It wouldn't surprise me if dogs' skins are actually cleaner than humans. Dogs don't sweat, and their skin is covered by a coat of hair. Think about it: dogs can go months without a bath without smelling, while develop some unpleasant BO after only a few days. And then there are people who only wash every few days, don't know they're supposed to use soap, wear clothes for days without washing, sometimes some combination of all three. Buuut, I'm just speculating.

More likely it has to do with risks. I think for injections, risk is minimal, complications rare, but humans are more likely to make a fuss if it happens. Also worth noting that alcohol swabbing for injections are a relatively recent thing. I don't remember ever getting swabbed until Covid. At the same time, when they put a line into a dog's vein, they do shave down the area and swab it clean. I guess there is more opportunity for infection in that scenario.

My Mom is a vet, she did alcohol swab before injecting.
My guess is the vet couldn't be bothered.

Our vet uses an alcohol swab before injecting our kittens

If it's intravenous, they will always shave the hair and sterilise the injection site.

If it's subcutaneous or intramuscular it doesn't matter.

I don't know about your vet, but everyone we have ever visited to treat our pets has swabbed the area of the injection and even shaved the site first.
