Hi there,

I have a total wireless setup:

Router:
DG834GT 108Mbps

Card in Laptop:
WG511T 108Mbps

My question is simple: Why can I not get 108Mbps? Both my Router and Wireless Card are 108Mbps and my Router and Laptop are about 2m apart with excellent strenght.

I hope anyone can help me.

it's all a lie I say! just look at your normal 10/100 lan lines, if you transfer a file over, you'll only see a max transfer rate of 80% utilization on the network.

you wont get 108Mbps, u myt get less thn tht.
are there any walls between? tht cud cause a prob. also cordless fones, or any device operating in the 2.4GHz frequency can interrupt ur signal strength.
But ya i agree with Bumzilla, its all a lie.

Sorry for not mentioning the brand:
Both the Router and Wireless Card are from NETGEAR.

There is nothing between the router and my Laptop, not dry walling, not anything.

the thing is, you might not get 108mbit on single transfer, but with multiple users ull get higher sustainable speed than using 54mbit or lower..

It will accomodate more users better basicly.

I get amlost a constand 54Mbps - this is what's displayed i the connection box.

The 108Mbps is a theoretical speed of the router (supposedly it's tested in the best conditions) and for marketing speak.

In reality you won't get near that, although it will be faster than 54mbps.

What gets displayed (and sold) is the Wireless rate.
The actual Ethernet throughput will be less than half that.

ie: a 54mbps Wireless link, will get you no more than 24mbps of actual throughput.

The rest all goes to collisions and management frames.

108mbps is a waste of time and money imho.

but in this case shouldnt it display "108mb connection"

straight form googel groups, may be worth a try
"Are you using the Netgear wireless config. utility or Windows Wireless
Zero configuration? If you're using the Netgear Utility, you must
place a checkmark in the box next to 108 AND 54MB in order to achieve
the 108 mb speed. Checking only the box next to 108 will not suffice.
In the router's settings, is there a setting for enabling packet burst?
If so, enable it. "

Basically, the 108mbps mode is a dirty mode and spills over and uses some additional channels (as I understand it) as such, it has to be ENABLED:-)

after doing multiple configs, adding a removing stuff, i'm positive its down to the wireless setting at Auto 108mbs. if you change it g & b on channel 11 everything is fine. alright so you could say you cant run at 108, but at least you get a constant connection. based on this netgear will hopefully address this on releasing a fix (ie firmware upgrade)

So yeah, anyone having issues with their Netgear, try:

1. Swapping out power adapters (wall wart)
2. Changing the wireless setting to B + G and channel 4

But of course switching to B + G mode is a waste of the GT, because I bought it for the sole reason of connecting at 108 via wireless. If I wanted to connect at 54 I would have gotten the G.

You need to enable 108mbps in the routers config. Mine only supports it on channel 6. Even next to the router the fastest i can upload to another pc is 1200kb/s

the WG511T is an 11a/b/g card, iow it does 108mbs in 802.11a mode.

the DG834GT is an 11g ap that gets 108 mode by using superG mode ( 2x54mb channels ) which is different from 11a which uses 1 channel running at 108mb

Your best speed will be 54 or 802.11g mode

BBJ

PS I have 2 AP's runnning WDS in superG (1km apart ) mode and they fly. The only time i can get close to max speed is when im pulling something from my unix machine. My XP machines almost never push the network to its limit.

PPS - im not sure of what i said here - might be totally incorrect

Funny enough, my router is on channel 6 and I still connect at only 54Mbps with Excellent Strength. Must it show 108Mb or 54Mbps?

the x-micro has an option to enable the turbo mode on the AP, there should be some setting in the ap config to enble turbo mode or sim. settings. it uses ch 6 and can't be changed with turbo activated.

Obelix,

I thought superG/speedbooster etc don't work with WDS. And also that WDS cut bandwidth in half. What AP do you use, and what is the actual transfer speed you get over the wireless link between two PC's running XP.

I'm also using WDS to connect two linksys WRT54G routers. Although they connect at a speed of 54Mbps, I only get a sustainable max transfer speed of 1.5 MB/s (~12Mbps).

Where on my Router's setup (DG834GT) can I get to the above mentioned settings?

Regards
