Why can't I press numbers while busy on a call?

I am new to Blackberry and will really appreciate if someone can help. I live in an estate where I need to press the no 9 to allow someone access when they phone me from the entrance gate. I can't seem to press any numbers whilst on the call? I feel really stupid and confused.

My BB is Bold 9700

You can press no.s when u on a call. I just tried it, also with a 9700

It just gives me an option to add it to speeddial? Still trying to figure out if my settings has something to do with it, although it should be on default

Just press, don't press and hold.
