Why Cell-C promotion will not end...and why it will get even cheaper!

Cell-C has no plans to end the 'promotion'.

  • It has first-mover advantage in implementing a disruptive technology, '4G'. This has the possibility of displacing traditional broadband delivery in SA (ADSL). The technology is the focus of investment in the US and elsewhere. It is an advantage that Cell-C does not have an vested interest in the fixed line provision of ADSL. This a boon to consumers.

  • It has labelled it as a 'promotion', as a subterfuge, so that the other mafia-style racketeers, could comfort themselves that Cell-C will soon see the light and increase their prices, as this is how business was always done in this sector. The racketeers will soon have to beat the prices of broadband as it is here to stay.

  • It has certainly benefited from glowing reviews on this forum and elsewhere. Who would have thought that we would all be this excited with Cell-C. Why risk that by ending something that works? Rather start offering uncapped or larger caps, say 25 or even 50GB per month.

  • Broadband costs can only fall from this point, given the supply of fibre-optic infrastructure currently being built.

  • SA's broadband and communications costs are known to be high, they will be regulatory intervention at some point this year. Cell-C, because of its broadband offering, will come out of that looking better than the rest.

he's pretty right though..... on all points.

let's just hope Cell C sees it this way too.

@ Stochos

I sincerely hope that you're right. I find myself wondering why Vodacom and MTN have yet to come up with a counter offer. What do they know that we don't?
Believe me, they are not stupid. They are not going to sit idly by and let Cell C take all their customers away.
Anybody who still spends more that R250.00 per month with either Vodacom or MTN is ignorant. You won't believe the amount of people I speak to that still have not heard
of the offer that Cell C are providing.

You won't believe how many people go through their life with blinkers on. It can take years for some people to twig and even then they need convincing. Hence why big Corporates spend millions on advertising in an attempt to drum things into peoples heads. What one person might find annoying as repetitive adverts would be ABC in learning to another.

IMHO this stick at this moment in time is a valid option to replace ADSL.

I know right? Yet how many people are really switching over. I know people that are still using iBurst!! The longer Cell C keep this up, the more people will wake up. At some point everybody else will have to drop their prices or get out of the business.

Sounds good yes, but I at this moment I think it's a waste to pay less for Cell-C then what I would pay for MTN or Vodacom because with Cell-C you can't be sure of a connection.

Connection is up and down and sometimes not even there at all.

For a few people yes but they are working on it. They'll get it right. They have to. They've got too much to lose if they don't.

I agree with Axis. There is a lot of people out there that are not information junkies and have grown apathetic and accepted the prices of the mafia for so long that they react with incredulity at the offer.

There are also 'market frictions' to take into account. Most people are locked into 24-month contracts. This also strengthens my argument that Cell-C will not increase their prices whilst the people in the know have already decided to take Cell-C data package, but are waiting for their contracts to expire. It would negate the positive coverage that they received thus far should they increase prices at any time this year.

The current rage is the US is 4G, so I think that even though this may not be equivalent, the impending increase in wireless devices such as tablet computers, ebook readers, smart phones all require broadband wireless connections.

I really believe that the incumbent 3G operators (mtn/voda) are playing a waiting game.

Their issue is coverage :/

I've bought a prepaid R2,999.00 dongle and now I'm moving in a few months - with possible no signal there.

Can simply sell the dongle and data?
There's no danger as I don't have an account?

4G DOESN'T exist!!! Not in the US, not anywhere!. how many times must you people be reminded of this? for a network to be "4G" it would have to provide 100Mbps for mobile applications and 1Gbps in fixed applications. Very far fetched with the current IT infrastructure in the world.

The headline item here was the company's decision to rebrand its HSPA+ network as 4G, likely bowing to pressure from the other top-tier US carriers -- all of whom have already begun using the term "4G" to describe their latest networks -- while also emphasizing that LTE still factors prominently into its 2011 plans. Both HSPA+ and LTE phones will be branded 4G from here on out, with a total of 20 or so planned for the year -- HSPA+ in the first half, LTE coming into the mix in the second half around the time that AT&T's first LTE markets go live.

I hope that the promotion does not end too. I am tied in to a 2 year contract that will only end mid 2012, so Cell-C would be a good option after that.

All of us must start advertising for cell c. I have changed atleast 20 people to cell c from vodacom and mtn.

I am in jhb, still dont have decent coverage. Its march. I attended the launch and they said coverage should be sorted out by end of Feb 2011 latest.
