Why Daylight Saving Time is a joke

Daylight Saving Time (DST) is a phenomenon practiced around the world, which has no beneficial effect on society or productivity.

As explained by The Verge, DST was started after Benjamin Franklin commented on the early rising of the sun in the spring months.

It had is roots (in the UK any way) in WW2. It does stop kids in Scotland from going to school in the dark.

So, daylight saving isn't a joke worldwide...

Nope, the article is right.. Ben Franklin when he was in Paris....

DST has one negative side effect... makes dealing with international offices annoying at times trying to figure out how far ahead or behind they are.

I'd rather have an extra hour of daylight in the evening rather than early in the morning while I'm still sleeping.

Seems a bit silly crediting Ben Franklin since most probably didn't have clocks at that time and simply got up with the sun.

Timekeeping devices / clocks precedes Ben Franklin by centuries.

Agreed - I'd rather have an extra hour of daylight in the evening :)

True but if memory serves affordable mass produced time pieces weren't available until the 1800s. So I'm guessing the average farmer relied heavily on sunrise/sunset to plan his day prior to Ben's revelation. :)

That's very likely - though Benjamin Franklin was somewhat of an inventor and visionary - I'd imagine him to have had a timekeeping device way before the masses.

Edit: Seems he invented his own clock design

I didn't make it clear that my thoughts on DST was UK based, where it was primarily introduced during wartime. There are lots of people who would prefer UK clock stay on BST (British Summer Time) which was introduced but reversed after two or three years!

I wonder how DST would fare in the RSA?

Keerist no..
Don't give our citizens more confusion around time. They struggle immensely with just one time frame already...

Moving onto permanent summer time is fine (Cape Town basically has this) but switching back and forth is way too much trouble.

Productivity falls and traffic accidents increase at the change overs. Plus timekeeping at 24 hour plants is a headache.

Gets a bit annoying both ways I guess. Sometimes still daylight at 9PM here during summer, but pitch black at 2PM during winter. But having more light hours is always a good thing - you don't realise just how much you miss the sun until you live in England.

I find it a bit disruptive personally. It's great at certain points for extra light but often I find myself thinking I have lots of extra time to do things in the evening because it's still bright out at like 8pm-9pm and then before you know it it's bedtime.
