Why do Apple have their own APN?

Apple? do you mean why have the cellular operators have chosen to put Apple devices on separate APNs, or do you refer to Apple's Push Notification service

I would imagine for the same reason why separate APNs are used by cellular operators, corporates, ... :
1. Differentiated billing
2. Traffic measurement & control
3. Reporting
4. Security
5. ...
Maybe the operators want to have some separate control over the traffic of the idevices re the impact they had on AT&T network, or maybe its part of the agreement with Apple: for example I can imagine they need to provide usage stats, ...
I doubt it's faster; but an APN can facilitate speed differentiation. Switching APNs can work; I'm not up to date on the latest controls arounds APNs; i.e. whether it's possible to restrict APNs to certain devices.

Thats probably what happens with the blackberry apn , and Nashua Extreme Data packages (i think it's called) with Nokia phones , where customised compression occurs and so is very device dependant
