Why do I owe SARS money this year?

Hi Guys!

After 3 years of doing e-filing myself, and usually I got about +-R3000 back from SARS, this year I owe that amount!

I do cliam againts a travel allowance (not logbook kept), the only thing that has changed since the last tax year, is that I now get medical and pension deducted from my GROSS pay. Now from What I can see is that I'm paying too little PAYE is that possible?

Go check on the last couple of pages.

You should have a separate section there for Medical Aid. On that section you have to declare some extra stuff that already shows in the IRP5 sections that does not pull through.

I almost had a heart attack before I realized it. Initially had to pay in R4000 and now I get money back after filling in that extra sections.

Just make sure your options on the first page is also correct.

PS. there might be a section for the Pension Fund also. I had a section for my Annuity Fund contributions which also made a HUGE difference.
 
I'm sure it said that if you filled it in in the irp5 section you must put 0 in the corresponding med aid section?
 
Something may have been disallowed. But not sure how they could do this without calling for supporting documentation.
 
Yeah I saw that too, but it since it was already in the IRP5 section I did not enter it again.
 
i want to register as an taxpayer at sars. but i guess i should have done it years ago, since my income is more than R130k per year. is there any penalties for registering late ?
i do pay paye at my employer. not so clued up on the tax thing. advice would be appreciated.

Just make sure you go to them before they come to you!

Then you should be ok!
 
thx. guess i'll have to make a turn there. tho i'd hate to go , and the 1st thing that waits for me is handcuffs. :P

Had almost the same issue...had a travel allowance added to my salary, didnt actually qualify for it. Found out too late about it, and so took it off my salary. But a few months went by...and the damage had been done...so ja, the one year I had to pay in R2700 TO SARS... :(
