Why do publishers avoid female heroes?

It doesn't take a genius to see that possible titles like Kitchen Hero, Sim Shopping and Every 28 days, won't be a hit.

I'm a manly MAN and playing a woman bashing somebody's face into the ground is just...creepy.

Well this is in regard with gaming, but in comics various editions is littered with female heroes, villains, anti-heroes en anti-villains.

When I relate to gaming, the female character would have to relate to the role of the protagonist or antagonist. When you take the female role of Lara Croft the whole storyline were built around the protagonist being a women.

I cannot see this happen in a game like Far Cry, Crysis, Medal of Honour, Call of Duty etc. Should they ever develop a game where the female is an intelligence officer it would be a whole different story and the matter of her purpose in a first-person shooter. Also when taking the emotional nature of women, they fit survival roles perfectly, in fact I think that Bioshock could have done nicely with a woman protagonist.

But there is no mention in this matter to adventure gaming; some of the best female protagonist appears in adventure games. Oh, but then again there is not many who played adventure games.

In fact women in primary roles is seen thoroughly in indie game developments, you should actually interview these developers and see their perspective on the matter and how to implement this in commercial gaming, or why not?

I never played Far Cry 3, but aren’t the protagonist Jason Brody?

Yes. And if you ever manage to play Far Cry 3 you'll see why that Brody woman single handily ruins the whole game.

I wonder of a game like Tomb Raider would have had the same appeal if it had a male hero and not a female? Or what if it was an overweight girl that was the hero, would it still have had that much success?

I was talking about stereotypical heterosexual males still stuck in the 1800s, but whatever floats your boat, I guess.

But but...Red Dead Redemption is set in the 1800's :(

Tell you what, I'll give in once and allow them to make the next Modern Warfare and COD with mostly female soldiers in there. But if it sucks and ruins the franchise the blame is all on you. (I'm also gonna contact my boy Steven Spielberg and pitch him an idea for a new movie: Saving Private Bridgett Jones)

Yeah uhm... good job on missing the point there. You completely missed the point of the article, if you even bothered to read it at all.

Either way, if female soldiers are enough to ruin an entire game franchise, then that game franchise didn't really have anything else going for it, did it?

I'm not missing the point. You are making the point something way bigger than it should be. These are bloody games not female voting rights.

And the article argues that games built around female protagonists are fine, yet publishers avoid them because for some really obscure reason a target demographic which has long since stopped being the sole demographic in the gaming industry might find they are unable to 'connect' with a protagonist because she has a vagina and not a penis.

Pretty ridiculous, if you ask me.
