Why do routers come with software CDs?

Maybe just for the update / flash utility and manual (sometimes there is no printed manual).

Some routers can connect via USB, but they need drivers for it. Otherwise it might provide a flash utility with backup firmware, electronic manual, automated setup process for network settings etc.

The Reason for this is to make it as comfortable as possible for the end user to set the darn thing up.

I got a Netgear DG834G...on installing it I put in the CD first. BIG mistake! Damn thing installs stuff on your system that prevents you from accessing the router without going through the "Smartwizard" - which is the worst wizard ever made. Luckily I had another PC connected to the router so I used that to log into the router settings and set it up.

It's mainly for automated router setup i.e. a person who can't type an IP address into an address bar and use the self proclaimed "advanced" setup.

What's an IP?

hehe, j/k....

fair point in some respects I guess. But really how difficult is giving instruction to open a web browser and type something into the adress bar along with associated picture descriptions?

ok didn't think of this one. but why buy a usb router? that seems to me you deserve all the pain.

Don't complain. You get a free cd for your rearview mirror.
