Why do SA gamers pirate?

Since I'm into retro gaming, almost none of the games I want are available in SA other than maybe in a Cash Crusaders/Converters.

Then there are Bigfish games like Bejeweled 3 priced at a ridiculous R200 for a retail boxed copy. :wtf:

Totempole, why would you pirate them then?
GOG and other sites offer so many older retro titles for dirt cheap.
Quite a few games are hitting the free domain now as well.

GoG titles have been tampered with to work on newer systems. As a result, the
system requirements are much higher than the original game, plus there are loads
of games which GoG doesn't offer.

I like to play my games on machines that run them natively. Playing games that
run at 320x240 resolution look much better on a 14"-15" 4:3 aspect monitor than
say, a 24" 16:9 aspect monitor.

Since when? That's the whole point of GoG. make older games work on newer systems. They will patch a game themselves or even bundle dos box with it.

I've bought a few very old games off GoG and they all work on windows 8.

Sounds like you making the pirate excuses.

Ugh, I'm so tired of these witch-hunts that always erupt on MyBB. Totempole pirates. Deal with it.

I also pirate tons of stuff. I don't have the cash to buy everything that catches my interest, so I pirate most of it and then buy the stuff I find good.

I pirate but that's not the point.
If I can afford a game I buy it.
Which lately with all the steam sales and gog offers has become 100% of my games.

I have just started playing S.T.A.L.K.E.R call of pripyat which cost me all of $4.99.
I purchased Witcher 2 for $7.99.
And just for the hell of it bought Fallout New Vegas Ultimate edition for $17.99.

That's really not expensive.

And that's your choice, not mine. We don't need people lording over others from their high horses, like Chevron seems so fond of doing. :)

Also, my Steam account.

Same here, though I prefer my games to be boxed, I'm old-fashioned that way.
Even so, I bought the GoG version of Earthworm Jim 1&2 some time ago and it
was a disaster.

EWJ 2 is Emulated in DosBox making it useless to me. There's no way to separate
it from DosBox because it uses CD-Audio for music, so it won't run properly on
anything slower than a P3 1GHz.

The original Earthworm Jim 2 works quite comfortably on an entry level Pentium 1,
so it wouldn't have been an issue to run it on my P2 400MHz Retro-PC.

Please. I pirate non netflix content as well. I just don't up excuses to justify it.

Why would I want to run older games on newer systems, If I have the system
for which the originals were intended? If you read my post about my purchase
of EWJ 1&2 from GoG, then maybe you'll understand where I'm coming from.

Why would I want to Emulate a Sound Blaster 16 in DOSBOX, If I own an actual
Sound Blaster AWE64?

I saw that afterwards. Guess you're a special case.

I threw out my Pentium 3 last millennium :D

Yes there are ways to get games cheap like say Steam sales, Bundlestars, Humble Bundle and so on, also keeping an eye on Indiegamebundles helps find em sales. Some cases you can get the odd AAA game for free (My sig for example) or even Facebook like the recent Metro 2033 give away

But all that said, If you want a specific game as its released it some times pay to pirate, even if its just to sample if you would like it. I did just that with Borderlands. Pirated the 1st game and now own both with all their add-on's

Point is a lot of people pirate and its not always the same for everybody and you will never eliminate it 100% either, but things like Steam and the above bundles does help limit the damage. I just wish the Music/Movie industries would join the digital age.

Edit: Totem have you checked http://www.desura.com/ for old games as well?

Though I've since replaced the Genius Speakers on the PC on the left with another set of X-140's.
