Why do South Africans take out their teeth?

I've noticed that a lot of South African's are missing teeth and seem to have no problem with this.

I've been to one or two dentists who assumed I was there to remove a tooth. It irritated me that they automatically assumed and I never returned there. I've also seen people at the dentist remove more than four teeth at a time simply because it was sore. I've even heard of people removing everything and replacing it with dentures :wtf: I know it's horrible having a root canal, but isn't that better than completely removing your tooth? I mean say you remove a tooth every year, by the time you're old you'll have nothing left.

I have a gap where a molar was removed, abscess under that tooth, most excruciating pain that I have ever experienced for 2 days and a bit (was on the weekend). Had to be pulled, immediate relief. That's my story.

Many peoples medical aid doesn’t cover dental the way it should. It is often out of necessity that they remove the tooth rather than having it fixed due to its cost implication.

I've had root canal done, after a tooth was hit with a hockey ball on the one occasion I wasn't wearing a gumguard. It was less painful than getting a filling done.

I've also had toothache that had me literally crawling on the ground, but when I got to the dentist, I refused to have the tooth removed. Surely the immediate relief doesn't weigh well against the long term loss?

Plus the fact that the tooth you remove renders the one directly above/below it somewhat ineffective when chewing as it has nothing to bite against.

Hardly know any Joburgers with missing teeth myself. I know of the stereotype in the Western Cape, but it's not as prevalent as I thought it would be.

It's cheaper as medical aids see most dental work as cosmetic and not necessary and also most dentists don't seem to contract to medical aid anymore so you've got to pay and claim back. With the price of about 2 to 4k for a root canal you can see why people say pull it

Or maybe they disguise it with fake teeth.

Mostly cost I guess. It's a lot cheaper to have a tooth pulled than to get a root canal done.
