Why does a Wii controller cost the same as a Wii U controller?

Because they are the same thing, the Wii controller works on the WiiU

However the WiiU tablet controller only works on the WiiU and is a lot more than R700.

I'm not paying R 700 for another controller, no way.
 
R700 is too much for a wii controller. Unless you're not talking about the wiimote?
 
I had a look on Junkmail, OLX and Gumtree. It is unfortunately difficult to find standalone controllers. People sell entire Wii sets but not the controller alone.

The third party controllers seem no good either. The Nitho ones don't have MotionPlus functionality and I've seen mixed reviews of the Wu branded ones, with some people complaining they stop responding after a few seconds.

So I guess I'll have to splash out on the real thing, brand new.

On the bright side...

Nintendo's build quality is so good, the equipment will probably keep working for decades.

In fact, Look And Listen have a special: R 899 for the Wii Remote Plus, and NumChuck.

Don't do it!

I just bought a Wiimote plus and nunchuck (generic) off ebay for less than R150... Works perfectly fine, just as good ass the original.
