Hiya everyone,

I have a Hellkom Megawatt ADSL router for my internet connection. Im with WebAfrica top-up package (pay as you need) and running the 384 line. So my ip address is not static and everytime I turn on the router when starting up my pc, I basically get a new ip address.

Why is it that if I leave my pc on, and the router, and its idle for a few hours that my ip address gets changed? Its almost as if after 6 / 8 hours of idle that the router automatically renews the ip address and I get a new one?

Can this be changed on the router, and reset it to 24 hours? Is this a router setting or is this something WebAfrica need to adjust?

Reason being that I work at night, and then go to bed, wake up next morn to work and the ip address has changed, which is a problem for me.

Cheers :D

You could probably try to change the idle setting on the router to NOT disconnect when idle. I'm not sure where this would be found on the router.

Dynamic IPs change.

You can try something like dyndns to get a free static ip

That statement above is incorrect, DynDNS does not give you a static IP addrress, but rather maps a static domain name to your dynamic IP. So you can always access your system remotely via this static domain name.

Dyndns hands out both Dynamic and Static DNS addresses, not IP addresses. That's what your Network Provider does (aka Telkom).

The setting for this time-out will be in the section where you enter your pppoe username and password. Set it to '0' (zero) - in other words, always on.

the setting he is talking about is on the router interface "10.0.0.2"
click advance->wan->quickstart->keep alive-> 0
but just to note my settings is on 10 "default" but my conection stays for days on end my isp is telkom maybe could be from webafrica but try this maybe it will work;) report back pls cos maybe my IP will stay constant for a month if I change it  I heavily doubt tho

ps. this settings is for the mega100 or mega 105 you could have the mega200 if so post then I will try to get those settings for u

Thanks!! Was looking for this, I will check tonight. I have the mega100, so thats kewl. I connect to a sql server, and give them my ip address so I have permission to connect to it for maintenance. Problem is I work, then go to bed...but leave everything on. Wake up and try carry on working, and notice my ip address has changed, internet connection still alive though. So either its this setting on the router, or WebAfrica resetting ip address every X amount of hours. Gonna try the router setting first, thanks :D

Well, I reset that value to 0 and my ip address is still the same, it didnt auto renew like last time. But, I did have FireFox open and Speedial as my home page. Got a few news websites in my Speedial windows that refresh every 60 mins automatically...so not sure if that was keeping my internet connection alive....and so it looked like I was busy...and my ip address didnt auto renew cos of that.

I will check over the weekend...and leave all windows closed...that way will know for sure...but so far so good :)

Ok...so have tested this for a few days...seems my problem of my ip address getting auto renewed has stopped. Have left my router on since Fri, and turned off pc's....when I restart them, still have the same ip...so thats great!

Hope this info helps someone? ;)
