this is crazy! why does it now take telskum 2 weeks top upgrade a line from 384K to 1MB/4MB ?? i have spoken to guys who said when they did this in the past, it took a day or two, tops.

what gives ??

Have you been waiting two weeks? Or is that what telkom told you?
Cause telkom tell you two weeks, and then do it in two days to make their service look good

thats what i ws told....so hope that its just a ploy and that i'm upgraded this week :-) how long does it take in real time ?

It's a profile change, so it could take a few milliseconds.

Just apply for the upgrade, wait 10 minutes, switch off your router and on again, check your line stats.

Because Telkom needs to go out to the exchange and install the correct equipment for the faster line... it doesn't take physical time, they just need to get a techie out to do the work... and then the admin needs to be done.

what happened to linespeeds getting upgraded for free. I heard that the 4meg line will get upgraded to 8meg. Is that a con again or is it true?

It is standard business practice really... precisely for the reason of the way consumers minds work!

You have a service level agreement of two weeks, do it in one week and everyone is happy. Promise two days, do it in a week and you will have every man and his dog coming on here and bitching about poor service levels blah blah blah....

Makes perfect sense...

The woman who upgraded our line said it would take six days because they were going on strike but instead it took 1 day?

So don't always belive what they say.

According to a Telkom tech. he said that did not go so well.
They will get there eventually

Your Exchange is probably not capable of higher speeds. So they'll tell you that then need to do "performance testing" on the line.

I'm also on a 384 line and wanted to upgrade to a 4mb line, I phoned telkom on the 1st of November (Saturday) to apply a was told it would be done by the next Wednesday as it takes a Maximum of 72 hours to be completed, I called on the Next Thursday, Friday and the following Wednesday again, went to find out at the local branch, all I was told that the order was in progress and that they would let me know once it has been completed. I then called again and asked to escalate the order as it was urgent, waited a few more days and still nothing, so I called again and the call centre rep said that the exchange that I'm connected to is only capable of 384 max speed and the ETA for the upgrade of the exchange is January 2009 but it's not defenite, just an estimation that's listed there.

How sure are you of this? I've had a Telkom guy on the phone changing line speeds until we got something that was stable. Went from 4096 to 3072 to 2048 and eventually found something that worked.

I seriously doubt they need to send someone out unless it's a DSLAM upgrade.
