Why does Motorola charge $40 for their synch software?

I am trying to set up my secretary's Motorola phone as a modem for her so she can get rid of the Polka internet and just use Vodacom to dial up to the Internet.

But I see that Motorola want to charge $39.90 for the version 5 Synch software.

Why do they do this when all the other manufacturers give their software away?

Is there any other way I can set her up to use the phone as a modem?
