Why does no one talk about the Windows Registry?

....that we're still paying 4 times the regular price for the same hardware, still can't play the latest games, still can't pop in a blu-ray to watch a high-def movie, still use Microsoft Office for Mac, still believe that we can buy coolness when buying a piece of hard plastic/aluminium/diamonds/whatever floats your boat with a hard drive and CPU in it.

Whatever. I use Aperture. And I don't need antivirus :p

But Apple was VERY clever with their marketing campaign....they coined the phrase "It just works". Well, obviously it doesn't, if I look at all the YouTube videos about Apple fainbois crying in disbelief that it "it just stopped working". The rest still gets brainwashed every day. :)

Now you're just sounding bitter. What's wrong? Can't justify the cost for one?

interesting to see the flame wars and mudslinging here :p

if somebody can donate a mac for "evaluation" I'll be happy to compare it between windows and linux (ubuntu opensuse etc) ;)

I've been using windows and linux for a while now, and find that unix variants are more hardened against malware etc, whilst windoze are (in general) easier to use (until problems crop up).

googling for issues on either windows or linux issues never let me down so far. Ubuntu's got a fairly good database of issues, and openSuSE you still need to hunt a bit.

Your obnoxious response reveals all. FYI I do NOT own or operate Linux, Unix or Ubuntu, and I never have. I was merely telling you that the reason Microsoft enjoys 90 % market share, is because they have pushed their OS into all the PC'S that are sold in stores. My hardware of choice is actually Apple and Mac OSX software. rsole.

Evidentally the Lol and :D in my post don't illustrate enough jest in my post.

At who's expense ? so you think that adding smileys makes it all better ? so I could tell you to "get lost :D" or "you are a jerk :D" and it would all be okay because 'I put smileys there' ?

My post which happened to be ignored, still remains as to the reason why windows captured such a large market share - Windows happens to have 90 % market share, because they were on 90 % (in this country 100 % for many years) of the computers that were sold in computer stores. So, you wanted a computer, you went and bought one from the computer store, and it had Windows, no other choices, unless you hack your computer or did some importing - but most users were technophobe, and would rather not go to those lengths.

So it attained 90 % MS not because it was necessarily a fantastic OS, but because it was the only one available at the time....and now that there are options, the average user is scared of change.

I am :D by the way

Whut? no one talks about it because... there's nothing to talk about.

Whats the big deal? I haven't had a registry error on any on my pc's. Ever.
I know its there, and I have poked around in it every now and then.

Windows is a tool, not a lifestyle. If it doesn't work for you get another tool, don't sit and brood about how your last tool didn't work for you.
Use the new tool, get on with your life. (you must lead a sad little existence)

Problem is not one of those tools are perfect all-rounders. You have to sacrifice a lot for each of them and can never be happy unless your major use for a PC sits in the little segment the OS accomodates for. I have many uses and interests for a PC and I can never ever be happy with what we have :/

+1
I'm primarily a Win7 user. I've used Linux a lot as well, but haven't had the oppurtunity to test-drive Mac OSX. Just because I haven't used it doesn't mean I hate it. Windows has advantages that I like - the 90% market share means that I get to use it at work, at home, at LANs, it's great for gaming. Linux has advantages that I like - I can customize it beyond anything I've seen on Widows, it is stable, less vulnerable, free. Mac (can't really seperate the OS and the HW, as far as my thinking goes) has its own advantages - everything is designed to work together, so in theory it should be more stable and foolproof. As stated I haven't had the oppurtunity to test the theory for myself, though.

But I can't see the need for any OS bashing. Each has its advantages and drawbacks. You simply choose the one you like most and live with it. And let live the rest. I haven't ever had problems with the windows registry, despite some tinkering with it before. You can break it, but then, I haven't, so this Windows "problem" doesn't bother me a bit.

Basically put I want an OS that is highly productive, graphical, has a simple user friendly interface, very secure and supports all the latest games.

Think I will get anywhere? I will need something called Winaplin or Aplinwin or something :/

Yup, it also has a habit lessening the sensitivity of some users, doesn't work all the time though.

Agreed, Microsoft have succeeded because they have better distribution channels and because of the familiarity there is a lot less of a learning curve going from one version of Windows to the next (Office on the other hand...)

Anyhow, just hope macboer realises now why I refer to Windows as the more popular OS.

I truely didn't think this would be such a flammable post. I thought everyone was tierd of "doze-bashing", i know i am. I just posted it because i've listened to a lot of "smackdown" podcasts and read a lot of bashing forums, but only now read about "the registry". :P

I see koffiejunkie realized it would be foolish to try and compare Unix or Mac against Windows 7, so he used ol' Vista.

The fact of the matter is....Windows 7 is pretty awesome and makes my Ubuntu desktop look ancient. The driver support is awesome, plug in any hardware and voila!, Windows 7 finds the latest driver on the net and you're good to go. That's how I like it.

Let's get to the viruses - if you're one of those cheapskates who constantly use warez sites, you know you're gonna get into trouble. Guaranteed that any keygen, software, crack you download, WILL have a trojan, worm or virus attached to it. I just avoid going there.

For everyday use, I've got Microsoft Security Essentials installed (free from Microsoft), it's very good and I haven't had a virus since I installed Windows 7.

We all know the relationship between Adobe and Apple started souring when Adobe choose to offer their suites for Windows users.....and if Adobe is the main reason why people choose a Mac, I think Apple better crawl back to Adobe on their knees, beg for forgiveness and try to win back their (once) best friend.

C'mon kingrob, it's a (well known) joke. I did not compare anything. And I didn't create that image either.

I use Microsoft Security Essentials too, but I consider the fact that this "essential security" still isn't baked into Windows from the start, a massive failure on Microsoft's part. When are they going to get it?

That's nonsense. Of all the people I know personally who have Macs, only one, a graphic designer, uses any Adobe software.

the best product that Adobe has is it's .pdf format. I love it.

Hint, common word used to mean "to edit or manipulate an image or a picture", and stems from the name of a popular Adobe product. (Which I think is the only reason people buy Macs, because apparently the Mac version is better in some way that I forgot).

I can't think of a single mac user, that I know of, who falls under that assumption of yours.
